Mrs. Sarah Devorah Rabinowitz, a longtime Crown Heights resident, passed away on Wednesday, 14 Tammuz, 5775.
She was a few days from her 85th birthday.
Mrs. Rabinowitz, known as Sonya, was the daughter of R’ Tzvi Hirsch Zarchi, the schochet from Vitebsk known as Rabbi ‘Hirschel the schochet,’ and Mrs. Leah Breina Zarchi.
She was a young child when first her mother, and then a few years later her father, passed away.
She grew up in the home of her older brother, Rabbi Meir and Luba Zarchi obm, who took her with them when they emigrated from Russia to Germany, and then to the United States.
In 1954, she married Lubavitcher Chossid R’ Yosef Rabinowitz obm, and together they built a home in the ways of Torah and Chassidus.
She was known for her open home and kindness to all, and was an example of the epitome of hachnosas orchim, a family member told COLlive. “She always made sure that everyone was comfortable, and everything she did was with a sincere heart,” he said.
Her husband passed away 15 years ago.
She is survived by her children Leah Gottesman – NY (formerly Montreal), Gitty Gamms – Brooklyn, NY and Eliezer Rabinowitz – Brooklyn, NY.
The levaya will take place tomorrow, Thursday, leaving Shomrei Hadas at 1:00 pm and passing by 770 at 2:00 pm.

So sad,, BDE, I knew her and her husband, two beautiful, respectful people………
One small occurrence that exemplified Mrs Rabinowitz’s selfless nature towards others happened when, as her upstairs tenant, one Friday afternoon she let me use her oven because mine was out of commission and when an unexpected group of guests arrived that night Mrs R suddenly appeared with an extra pan of chicken, without asking! She humbly explained that being that I used her oven earlier that day, she knew I had not properly prepared for the meal and wanted to help out!!!
