An African American male tried taking advantage of a Jewish woman who lives in Brooklyn’s Crown Heights neighborhood on Sunday night.
Hiding in an alleyway of a Jewish home on President Street, between Albany and Troy Avenues, the man jumped out with a knife in hand when the woman passed by at around 11:30pm.
He told her to remain silent and follow him. Bravely, the woman’s first reaction was to yell as loud as she can. A few Jewish neighbors heard the scream for help and rushed outside.
“The man was wearing a Yankees baseball cap, a white t-shirt and black jeans,” one neighbor told COLlive.com. “The best thing she could have done was yell. When we all came out, the attacker walked away calmly with no remorse.”
2 police officers came to the scene, as well as volunteers of the Shmira patrol. No arrest has been made, one person present reported.
The answer is not “don’t walk alone,” or “move out of the crown heights” These type of “people’ will follow you where you go. The answer is, set bait, apprehend, teach a lesson. Let the word spread. The police is here to write you parking tickets, take pictures and file a report of how you got mugged, not to save you. We must do that, as a community. Bait, and teach a lesson. Let the word spread. Heck, even start false rumors about a guy “who tried this and ended up regretting it” it doesn’t have to be true, but… Read more »
WE ARE ALL PROUD OF YOU, GOD BLESS YOU, YOU MAKE US PROUD!
Yes, we do describe the criminal and use all available details to try to identify him and no, we don’t find it necessary to invade the privacy of the victim. At least, that’s the way a decent society works. For people like you, who are so ‘open minded’ that your brains have fallen out, it’s all about protecting the criminal. Don’t worry, he’s not likely to ever be arrested.
that this ended without physical harm.
Sad that there are people that are prepared to harm others.
Entertained that there’s a poster – #12 who thinks her job is to tell everyone else what they should do.
What difference does the color of his skin makes? I know she was Jewish, but doesn’t mention the color of her skin. Couldn’t have the article state that a “man” or even thug, criminal etc…why list “black”? If he was white would author write “white man…” I doubt it.
What then? Should no-one work because they must come home at 6pm in the winter though it gets dark by 5? Should single women eat the Shabbos meal alone every Friday night unless there is someone to walk them home? Women cannot just stop walking at night, it’s unrealistic of you to believe that they able to even if they were willing. The idea is to stop crime, not to stop living.
Learning Tanya, learning chassidus is seyatto dushmaya for a safe enviroment . I never ever go alone after 9 PM particular in the summer time. We want moshiach now
My relatives in Boro Park used to taunt us that we live in a “terribly dangerous” neignborhood, until Leiby Kletzky Hy”d was caught and murdered two blocks from their home…
B”h she and e/o is ok, and although CH is very scary, we must remeber that it is the rebbe’s shchuna and where Bais Rabbainu is located. a place of kedusha attracts klepiah. the F. rebbe chose CH 4 reason, G-d knows y, but we must remeber Hashem Lo Yanum Vlo Yishan!It6 is known that learning tanya baal peh and reviewing it portects you from harm, as well as other things. and besides 4 all this, all the tips and safty precautions r a must as well. wondering y there is no law 2 teach such things in skwl, besides… Read more »
You’re so right! Actually you’re dead WRONG!!! If you value your life you will find a way to stay safe. As for example; if you don’t have someone to walk with spend the measly few dollars and take a car service, unless of course you like living dangerously with no consideration for how you might mess up other people’s lives if G-d forbid something did happen to you
at least she’s safe and ok
Which forms of pepper spray are legal?
Why would u leave ch it’s holiest place 770
We left Lubavitch. We left Riga. We left Warsaw. We left Rostov. At some point shchunos change, and when the signs all say it’s time to leave, then it’s time to leave.
What’s going on with crown heights! Everything bad is happening there! I don’t live there but I’m scared for my relatives! Police must put more security in crown heights!
That’s just my opinion……
I totally disagree with No. 20. . . there is a terrible ‘sekoneh’, (danger) for a woman walking alone 11.30 at night! I wish her all the very best only, but there is most definitely a huge risk involved here, as has been just proven! 99% of the time it can, and must, be made possible that people, especially women, don’t walk alone; previous arrangements can, and must be made somehow, and no one must walk alone. You say its practically impossible to do so? ask this woman now if she will ever walk alone again at night, I can… Read more »
What planet do you people live on? It is not practical to never walk alone! Seriously, who can do that? Who always has someone to walk with? Almost no one i Know.
BS”D
scary
brave, smart women
good, quick thinking
Thank G-d it ended well
Thank G-d , Thank G-d
Nobody blames you for not trying to pursue the criminal, this is a timid community probably for good reason. But your comment that ‘the best thing to do is to call the cops’ is not… the best thing to do. I don’t know what the solution is, apart from concerned citizens getting involved (like they do in Williamsburg) but I think everyone here knows that for whatever reason, ‘calling the cops’ has not been the solution.
…even cameras.
Carry pepper spray
Crime is going down in NY. This was not a crime because it didn’t happen. If they arrest the guy then they will have to report that there was a crime but that will ruin the good numbers for the city so for now let’s just make believe it didn’t happen…..
why CH doesn’t have videocameras on the street? Like security cameras?
Everyone ( men & women) should carry, as well as a loud whistle. But the best is not to be out alone late at night – if necessary, then the $6 for car service is money very well spent.
very easy to sit in front of a computer and type to go and grab the guy yourself.
what if he had a gun in his pocket? would you willing to take the risk, go grab the guy and be shot? then what? your wife and you kids will be sitting shiva today rachama litzlan.
best thing to do is to call the cops
1. Unless it’s an absolute emergency, no woman or girl should walk alone after dark. If she must, then someone she knows, who is a responsible and smart person, should be waiting for her arrival and know what to do if she does not appear after a reasonable amount of time. 2. Obviously, the victim must file a police report. 3. If people saw the perpetrator walking away, they should have apprehended him and held him until police and Shmira arrived. 4. The police must be pressured to pursue this perpetrator, no excuses should be tolerated. This situation is very… Read more »
The whole world is crazy, but still we should take the safe route and not walk alone late at night.
Kan tzivah Hashem es habracha
Kan Tziva. Every place has it’s drawbacks. Kudos to everyone who lives in the Rebbe’s shchuna in spite of such difficulties
The Rebbe’s words sayings and all live on for ever and ever as it says the words of a Holy person live on .. So number 6 & 7 please explain yourselves unless you feel what the Rebbe has said means nothing today to you and for you
Wake up Crown Heights, there really are safer (and cheaper) places to live.
& this is why I’d be nervous if I had to move in the neighborhood.
Every crime must be reported otherwise it never happened!
That’s so scary. I know that most sexual assaults happen by someone the victim knows so this is very frightening. What a psychopath. Thank God she’s safe!
Shame
Why didn’t the neighbours grab the guy or at least follow him
Ther should be an arrest for that man u
