A mother and her three daughters arrived for their 9:00pm, private appointment. Each girl was carrying a large, full shopping bag which they put down in a corner before they browsed the racks of fresh from the cleaners, uniform skirts.
I was intrigued. Gemach clients usually come in empty handed and leave with full bags. Throughout their appointment the girls glancing back and forth between themselves with raised eyebrows as if questioning each other. I was further intrigued.
After each girl had chosen her skirts, shirts and sweaters I moved to walk them to the door when the oldest sister, a high schooler, collected the bags they had brought with them and reached out to hand them to me. She took a deep breath and cleared her throat. “These are the things you gave us last year. We took really good care of them so we could give them back for someone else to enjoy.”
It was an absolutely priceless moment. The shy smiles. The pride. It was both powerful and humbling to experience giving come full circle!
Please continue to be there for the uniform gemach by bringing gently worn uniforms to the porch of 1287 Carroll St.

this gemach has saved us hundreds of dollars in uniforms; mrs lustig gives with dignity, has the pleats ironed by the cleaners, sews the skirts to fit my skinny girls, calls me ahead of time to remind me to please come and choose, etc. this is one super mitzva definitely befitting her dear father a”h who treated his students with love, dignity and compassion.
