Machon Chana held its annual Chag HaSiyum, End of the Year Ceremony, Tuesday evening at the Machon Chana dormitory on President Street.
Present as every year were this year’s students, teachers, staff and alumni. In addition, family and shluchos of the students came from as far away as Sweden, Brazil, Chile and Montreal and as close as New Jersey, Flatbush and Crown Heights. Members of the executive board of NCFJE were also present at the Chag HaSiyum.
The evening was opened by Rabbi Shloma Majeski, principal of Machon Chana. Then Rabbi Yitzchok Dubov, a teacher at Machon Chana, read the Rebbe’s most recent letter to Machon Chana followed by reciting the Rebbe’s chapter of Tehillim.
A D’var Torah was shared by student Shterna Sara Amar of Montreal, whose mother was present and is an alumnus of Machon Chana.
Mrs. Magda Gutman from Rio De Janero, Brazil, and the mother of current student Sara Gutman spoke on behalf of the parents. In addition to thanking the Machon Chana staff for everything they have done for her daughter, she also thanked her shluchim Rabbi Yehoshua and Chani Goldman.
First year student Sara Kaye, who recently graduated from Arizona State University, was called upon to reflect on her experiences at Machon Chana. She thanked all of her fellow students, whom she believes will be friends for life, the teachers, as well as her shluchim Rabbi Shmuel and Chana Tiechtel who helped guide her to a place where studying in seminary was something that she wanted to do. Sara shared that she is eager to return to Machon Chana to continue her studies next year.
Second year student Laila Tassano spoke next, poignantly describing how she came to the realization that her soul had become dehydrated and didn’t even realize that it was in need of the life-giving waters of Torah. Laila paid tribute to Mrs. Gita Gansburg, the long-time dorm mother of Machon Chana, who she had the privilege to learn from the entire year last year and just a few short months this year.
The overflow crowd was then addressed by Mrs. Chana Nemni, a teacher and mashpia in Machon Chana, and Mrs. Yehudis Cohen, assistant principal in Machon Chana. Both women shared ideas for the students to take with them throughout the summer months and beyond.
Rabbi Shea Hecht, a member of the executive committee of NCFJE, was the final speaker before the certificates were awarded. He urged the students to use their potential, citing the Rebbe’s encouragement to always do more and more.
Certificates were awarded to 15 of the students and all of the students received a book as a memento from their studies at Machon Chana this year.
Evening classes will take place throughout the summer Monday – Thursday from 8-9 p.m. beginning July 6 at the dormitory.
Registration is open for the upcoming year and can be done on-line on our new website machonchanayeshiva.com.
