if vaccines were bad
July 6, 2015 7:01 am

why would the us government administer vaccines (much more than regular people ) to their soldiers? do you think that they would like to harm their own soldiers? please stop with crazy ideas that you read on a treife website. Stay with the Rebbe Ask prominent doctors and follow their instructions to vaccinate. You are risking your loved ones life

Torah approach is to RELY ON DOCTORS for medicine and healing
July 6, 2015 12:56 am

I don’t understand why so many want to argue over interpretation of the Rebbe’s words in one letter or another. Seems to me inarguable that the Rebbe strongly emphasized how important it is to go to a doctor and to rely on the medical community. Sure, the Rebbe would sometimes say go to another opinion, but that other opinion would be from another DOCTOR, not from any “alternative” source. So here are the two points that are salient to this discussion: 1) Clearly, the Rebbe espoused relying on what is referred to in modern lingo as “traditional” medicine, and NEVER… Read more »

#62 is the typical example
July 5, 2015 11:12 pm

#62 is the typical example of what you should not pay attention. Even if the remote case that her case is true, she is the exception. And if she is the exception and for some ultra rare genetic reason she cannot be vaccinated, she should be the one imploring for other people to vaccinate, as she would heavily depends on the herd immunity. as #66 pointed out, don’t listen to such dramas. As a real doctor instead of doing “research” on bizarre or rare cases and getting emotional about it. If you know someone who thinks that vaccination is bad,… Read more »

בס”ד there are a lot of divergent views. my personal observations as an old Chosid and an old American: 1. on personal items, what The Rebbe wrote for one is not necessarily meant for all. this is like going to a custom tailor rather then buying an off the rack garment. Our Rebbe measured us and advised us; for what fits us and our individual circumstances. Vaccinations seem to be a klaladik item. 2. many years ago, as a child, the summer was a fearful time. every year, thousands would come down with polio, hundreds would remain parilized, dozens would… Read more »

Your’s is one story out of millions. When scientist/doctors conduct medical research, they look at THE OVER ALL results. If more people would be educated in what the scientific method really is and not feel they’re educated on the matter because they googled something someone else told them about, this would be a none issue.
PS, Our own Rebbe was an engineer, which involves a tremendous amount of science, not feelings and rumors.

#23 it would help ig you fact check
July 5, 2015 12:18 pm

Percent of children 19-35 months old receiving vaccinations for:
Diphtheria, Tetanus, Pertussis (4+ doses DTP, DT, or DTaP): 83%
Polio (3+ doses): 93%
Measles, Mumps, Rubella (MMR) (1+ doses): 92%
Haemophilus influenzae type b (Hib) (primary series + booster dose): 82%
Hepatitis B (Hep B) (3+ doses): 91%
Chickenpox (Varicella) (1+ doses): 91%
Pneumococcal conjugate vaccine (PCV) (4+doses): 82%

I’d say the rov get vaccinated.

Herd Immunity
July 5, 2015 8:23 am

I was not vaccinated, and had caught mumps from my classmates who were vaccinated against mumps. So please stop educating people about Herd Immunity. You do not sound educated – when you keep blurting it out.
“You never got sick?? Oh of course, it’s thanks to Herd Immunity!” “The only reason you’re alive today (even though you were not vaccinated) is because of Herd Immunity!!!”. (Why thank you “G-d”!)
HERD IMMUNITY IS A MYTH. STUDY THE FACTS AND STATISTICS. I FELT IT ON MY OWN SKIN.

#56 you are totally right.

As a young girl in school, friends would “bully” me – because I did not recive vaccinations. (My older siblings were vaccinated religiously, up until I was born. My mother had done serious research for a few years, and thank G-d stopped by me.) Friends called me “crazy”, they told me my mother was crazy. And at some point I learned to shut my mouth, in order to stop the humiliation. Unfortunately we have seen the dangerous effects of vaccines on one of my siblings. Unexplained spasms and attacks at toddler age, and permanent effects later on. THE TESTS THAT… Read more »

Don't play with fire
July 5, 2015 12:46 am

Those who don’t vaccinate don’t realize that they play with fire! They are putting their children at a much greater risk. My parents vaccinated us but were not careful in making sure we got all our vaccines (partially because of all the anti vax claims). When I was 20 years old I contracted Mumps which caused orchitis. I now suffer from severe male factor infertility directly caused by the mumps and even with many treatments and IVF etc. we still have not had success in having children. Isn’t it amazing that people who are smart enough to study and understand measles, work with it, and even find a cure (!), and people who read internet websites and convince themselves they lnow better than the FDA, medical universities and established science are both part of the human race! min hamedaber! It amazes me. A bit like the people who put a man on the moon and their cousins who won’t believe them. Baha!

July 3, 2015 7:39 pm

I literally cannot believe that there are people in MY community who have their heads buriied so far in the sand so as to deny established medical science. The positive effects of ALL common vaccines are proven. There has never been a study that has shown ANY negative effects. So what is the question?

Reason
July 2, 2015 11:27 pm

The overwhelming medical research, the overwhelming medical community, and the overwhelming number of people are supportive of vaccinations. Under such circumstances, a reasoned reasoning of all the Rebbe’s words leads to the inescapable conclusion that the Rebbe supported vaccinations in such circumstances so long as the quality of the vaccine was reliable(i.e., not from some 3rd world country or some quack). Those who do not vaccinate their children are endangering the lives of their own children, as well of the lives of other children whose immune systems are weak. The claims of some regarding the harms of today’s vaccines have… Read more »

#50 emphasis was in the fact that the vaccines are safe. You just need to ASK YOUR DOCTOR to figure out which ones are safe. Now a days all of them are safe according to all mainstream and top doctors. When the Rebbe wrote the letter there was no Internet for you to watch a movie on the YouTube or learn from hippie healers that sells natural mishigaz online and do fear mongering. Vaccines saved bilions and bilions of people. Some people really can’t be vaccinated and therefore depends on herd immunity. Unfortunately some people here can’t understand this concept… Read more »

I'm old enough to remember polio
July 2, 2015 8:49 pm

I’m old enough to remember polio. It killed many children, rachmonu litzlan. Kids would just disappear from school and never come back. At my school only one girl came back, she had lost the use of one arm, it was shriveled and hung by her side. The illness itself was horrible too, patients who didn’t die had to live in bed with a big device over the body called an iron lung. I can’t believe any parent would want to leave open a chance for their precious child to get this. Back in the early 50’s we were vaccinated for… Read more »

Your agreement or lack thereof is irrelevant. The Rebbe in the 1986 letter chose a parable and elucidated it with examples for someone so that it relates to them. That’s it. If the fellow was a doctor or med student during the 1950-60’s (following the polio epidemic) he would understand the point about Chinuch most clearly from the examples The Rebbe expressed, maybe best from the example of [polio] vaccination. July 2, 2015 11:45 am

These letters of The Rebbe are being misrepresented! The letter from 5715 [1955] is EXCLUSIVELY addressing polio which was killing thousands per year and paralyzing tens of thousands at the time. The Rebbe responded in the language of the person, essentially, “You can take comfort in that everyone is doing it.” This was NOT the basis for the answer (which was medical/statistical etc), but rather it was what the person needed to hear. This letter does not have a bearing on ANY other vaccinations, nor does it apply to polio anymore (which can be healed today). The letter from 5746… Read more »

I had also vaccinated my children, but on a previous debate about vaccination on Collive I had noticed a number of comments that made me research further, and I feel like we all must be better informed. I know the Rebbe also said to give only those vaccines that have been proven for twenty or thirty years to be safe. So nowadays the newer vaccines we need to be wary of. Back then they only gave a few vaccines and they were safe.nowadays the medical establishment added many new vaccines and too many at the same time so I think we need to do what the REbbe said: only those vaccines we know have been proven to be safe for years already.

July 2, 2015 11:06 am

Most parents who do not vaccinate don’t do it because of what they hear or read, they are very very frum claiming to be holier than others following every word of the rebbe and these are the same irresponsible mothers who have home births .i hAve seen first hand serious situations regarding home births. As a principal in a school that enforces vaccination for all children I have had this discussion with many parents and I can tell you that most parents who don’t want to vaccinate their children are not basing their decision on medical reasons but rather on emotions. They are not interested in listening to any reason, research or data presented to them. The Rebbe’s opinion is very clear and consistent. Listen to your doctor and vaccinate. Babies are WEAK? WHO TOLD YOU THAT NONSENSE? YOUR OH SO QUALIFIED “G-D LIKE” DOCTOR?
The fact is that babies may catch more easily, but are faster in getting over a flu or the common cold, thanks to their healthy clean un-meddled immune systems. But – give a newborn or young baby a big dose of artificial and dangerous materials, – YES then it makes sense that he would be weak. BABIES ARE NOT BORN WEAK.

Parts of a letter from the Rebbe. My comments are in UPPER CASE. You can google this letter and found it complete on chabad.org The connection between medical science and Halacha is already inherent in the Torah itself, as our Sages declare, “The Torah brings רפואה to the world.” The meaning of it is not that the Torah negates medical science in any way. Should they stop because most of the kids in their child’s class doesn’t? The Rebbe gave this advice before opposing information was available. Israel follows a different schedule than the US. #8 & 9 (another couple of ignoramuses): The insurance companies don’t set the schedules of immunizations. The CDC (Center for Disease Control) sets the schedule based on extensive research. Yes Parents, give those little bodies their shots exactly as you are directed to, by their RESPONSIBLE PCP (Primary Care Physician).

my 2 cents
July 2, 2015 1:46 am

1) it was always accepted that an agris to an individual does not mean it is horoh lirabim

2) why do ppl feel the need to twist the Rebbe’s words to fit their agenda? Anything the Rebbe ever said, I can always default to “that was over 20 years ago, the world has since changed”.

If you don’t want to follow something the Rebbe once said, good. Why must you shleps the Rebbe into your nonsense? There are some areas that I too, don’t follow the Rebbe. I don’t distort it to make me feel happy.

If the majority vaccinated then torah holds you can’t separate from them. If majority doesn’t vaccinate, then don’t vaccinate. Life threatening.

The Rebbe on Vaccines; Doctors' Infallibility
July 2, 2015 1:18 am

See the Kehos book, Healthy in Mind, Body and Spirit, vol.2, page 129, where, in 1960, the Rebbe warns against the over-use of anti-biotics, based on new medical research that came to light at that time. The Rebbe says specifically NOT TO RELY SOLELY YOUR DOCTOR, and I quote (the Kehos translation): “It would be particularly beneficial for you to encourage him (the doctor) to check this out specifically with those who have been actively researching this matter, since by and large practicing doctors do not have too much time for research. [This is] particularly so, since the drug companies… Read more »

missing the point
July 2, 2015 12:47 am

Most comments are missing the point here completely. The rebbes response is very clearly pro vaccination. It isn’t an option based on if your class does it or not. The rebbe knew that most people were vaccinating. So instead of getting into the merits of vaccination, the rebbe made it simple. Just do what everyone else does. This answer is tenfold stronger today. Since most doctors and most schools mandate vaccination, it is obvious that the rebbe is taking the same position. I dont see any room for any doubt. Anyone who chooses not to vaccinate is playing poker with… Read more »

This letter probably made sense back when it was written but now it doesn’t. Like the above comments; what if your childs class decided not to vaccinate? I would get my kid as far away from that school as possible. Times have changed, medically speaking

to #3
July 1, 2015 10:44 pm

Yes the vaccines were spaced out. Now, they are not. However, the Rebbe not only explicitly said to vaccinate, but also to ALWAYS listen to your doctor. In numerous letters the Rebbe wrote very explicitly to do what the doctor is saying since he was the one that sit his whole life and studied the subject matter.
Also, we know that when the Rebbe wrote doctor, he meant a doctor from a prestigious, regular, medicine school. Not your local guru herbalist that uses strange intuitions instead of proven of medicine .

to #3 & #4
July 1, 2015 10:44 pm

To #3: And do you think that the Rebbe of the 50s had no idea of what would be in 2015?
I think that if the Rebbe gave advice, it certainly lives on not just then, but now also.
And to #4: If your child is vaccinated, then why are you so afraid children who aren’t?

Actually #4
July 1, 2015 10:43 pm

That is hepech the Rebbe’s answer. I can accept a reading of the letter that says if they do then do so and if they don’t then don’t, and Hashem will help. Even then, the question comes up if we’re not comparing apples to oranges because of the tremendous amounts of vaccines that the schedule now calls for and their lack of spacing (which it’s only done because insurance companies want to save money). But to have an agenda vaccines when the Rebbe is open to both possibilities mei’ikar hadin just isn’t right.

Spread out the vaccines, and surely don.t overburden the little bodies of your dear little babies with many vaccines at one time. Wait till they get older, stronger and then vaccinate them.

i asked the same question

When my kids were little I asked the same question. The Rebbe told me to ask the Rov. The Rov told me that since everyone was doing it, I should do it also.

This was the situation when this was written

Like the above comments; what if your childs class decided not to vaccinate? I would get my kid as far away from that school as possible. Times have changed, medically speaking

If most of the children in the class are not vaccinated

Then if you love your child you need to find him another class. Preferably another school.

The vaccines were spaced out. I know the letter well and it changed my position on vaccines somewhat. But to fit this in with today when honest doctors have railed against the vaccine scheduling and multiple simultaneous stimulation. And, we have the metzius that any honest doctor who speaks out faces censure and loss of license. Compare apples to apples with the intellectual honesty that the Rebbe’s answers deserve.

most of the class?

so…what does most of the typical anash class do? vaccinate or not?
exact dates doctors recommend or delay? Give time between vaccinations?

Wow amazing!

This letter takes care of all issues. The Rebbe doesn’t get into whether it is healthy or affective… Rather the Rebbe says follow the majority and don’t separate yourself from the klal
