A campaign to encourage Jewish married women to unite in covering their hair for one Shabbos is gaining momentum.
“Cover Your Locks for Love,” a campaign to unite in covering one’s hair for Shabbos of 3 Tammuz, was started by a woman whose relative is in urgent need of a speedy recovery.
“We all need to be proactive, to do something in the merit of loved ones, friends and fellow community members who are praying for a refuah shelaima,” she said. “The Zohar says that through the Mitzvah of covering her hair, a women brings benefit to health and livelihood, and blessings to her children and grandchildren.”
The project soon picked up steam, with other volunteers joining to spread the word. Events are planned in other cities like New York and Sydney, Australia, to bring awareness to this pivotal woman’s Mitzvah.
The response from women around the world has been incredible, the organizer said. “Every woman we speak to, whether she is frum or not, has been excited to be a part of this special Shabbos. We all have some way we can improve in this Mitzvah,” she said. “It’s about each person’s relationship with Hashem through the Mitzvah.”
In advance of the Unity Shabbos on June 20, an evening of learning and awareness will take place in Crown Heights, featuring renowned lecturer on women’s issues Shimona Tzukernik on the relevance of hair and the reasons for covering it.
The event is being held l’iluy nishmas Shula Swerdlov OBM, sponsored by friends in Israel, and will take place on Wednesday, June 17 at 7:30 pm at Chevra Ahavas Yisroel.
Each person who joins the unity Shabbos should do it in the merit of someone they know who is need of a refuah shelaima, organizers note. “Our main goal is to reach as many women as possible to invite them to join in this great Mitzvah, in unity with so many others around the world,” organizers said. “Unity breaks all barriers.”

There are 2 inyanim here. One is to cover your hair, all your hair & the other is an issue of tznius.
Long flowing sheitlach do fulfil the first but fail in the tznius department.
Long hair is attractive & attracting. Don’t kid yourselves ladies.
Hair must be covered short or long still good
inspiring!!!
Thank you for the clarification. It is it not a mitzvah for sure. Mitzvah in sense of good deed in fulfilling a horaa of the Rebbe.
There is NO mitzvah of sheitel!!! The mitzvah is kisue rosh. Please don’t confuse the Rebbe’s request and G-d’s commandment!
Yes but a long sheitel is also the mitzvah of sheitel, as the Rebbe ask us! Let’s commend ladies for opting for a sheital over a tichel, altogether! And PS many shorter wigs these days, as it is the trend now 🙂
long shatel not tznios at all. lets covering with a nice and modest way.
When I read, Cover your locks for love, I cried, I really felt that the wording was so great, and when it says that the women’s hair covering affects the livelihood, ect ect and the grandchildren ect, I resolved to do better. I’m not a saint, but I will do better, I will improve. I will try. Thank you to those that wrote this.
Get in touch with Yaffie Begun of s. paulo, Brazil..she speaks about kissui rosh all over south america..
and loving this special zechus for her
May it bring all the refuos and brachos that Am Yisroel needs. And may it lead to many more mitzvos, especially the Geula.
Let’s be careful always.
So we can be a keili for the brachos the Zohar lists.
So inspiring.
So encouraging.
So strengthening.
