The bochurim of the Smicha Yeshiva in Los Angeles were treated to an all-day marriage workshop with world-renowned Chassidic philosopher and lecturer, Rabbi Manis Friedman. Rabbi Friedman addressed questions of before and during dating, and after marriage, such as:
What is the role of a husband?
Making lists; is it a good idea?
What you need to know about yourself before dating.
The connection of your family of origin and the family you are about to build.
How much do you reveal and how much don’t you reveal?
Appropriate / inappropriate topics of conversation
Good chemistry; what is that?
Hamshachas HaLev or falling in love
The role of the Shadchan during dating
How do you know it’s right?
What’s with all the broken engagements?
What is a good reason to say no?
How to define “cold feet?”
The lectures were held on the beautiful Chabad of Pacific Palisades Jewish Community Center campus, with a catered lunch and dinner generously sponsored by Chabad of Pacific Palisades and Dr. and Mrs. Dahan.
The bochurim got to chat with Rabbi Friedman one-on-one during lunch and dinner breaks, and to raise questions during the lectures. The program ran until 10 pm, with two short breaks. The classes were so engaging and relevant, the participants would have easily sat through another few hours.
“The bochurim gained so much from the classes,” said Rabbi Dovid Schmukler, Rosh HaKollel. “The Rabbi definitely clarified ideas that many find mystifying. Today we can’t afford to not educate in these matters. I know how much the bochurim appreciate the insights they gained. One by one, they keep coming over to thank me for hosting Rabbi Friedman.”
The program is part of Kollel Tiferet Menachem’s undertaking to educate and equip the students for setting up a healthy and happy Chassidishe home. The event is produced by ItsGoodtoKnow.org.

Lets get this going in all Yeshivos!
Every yeshiva should offer such a course , not just for Smicha candidates. People of dating age need to learn communication skills, anger management, dating etiquette, budgeting and how to handle finances, how to treat their dates respectfully, basic menschlichkeit, how to communicate with parents and in-laws, short term andinf term educational goals and career paths, and being comfortable in their own skin, before becoming emotionally involved with someone. Daters need to know when to continue or when to break off. Healthy relationships take effort and hard work. Kudos for this excellent program.
Seminaries always offered ‘Bayis Yehudi’ classes dealing with some of these topics but the bochrim never got this kind of stuff.

All smicha programs, big and small should make this workshop mandatory. If funds get in the way, then everyone should pitch in to fund it.
Other smicha programs should take note. This is such a vital topic and all smicha aged bochurim should learn these things. Just like seminary girls do.
