Many Crown Heights residents have been virtually disconnected Monday, desperately searching for alternative methods of connection to the world wide web.
Subscribers of Cablevision and its brand Optimum Online have been experiencing an internet outage since approximately 11 am this afternoon.
Local businesses on Kingston Avenue, the neighborhood’s main street, remained offline and were unable to process credit card payments for their customers, one business owner told COLlive.
Tully Kahan of Kahan’s Superette rushed to obtain a wireless internet connection piece in order to accommodate his customers who wished to pay by credit card.
“They said they are working on fixing it and it would be completed by this afternoon,” Kahan said. “We are still waiting.”
While service men and trucks could be seen on Albany Avenue and on Carroll Street doing repairs this afternoon, as of 6:00 pm the service had not been restored.
Wayne Wood, the company’s Manager for Construction in Brooklyn, told COLlive the outage occurred when a Con Edison crew accidentally snapped two of the neighborhood’s main cable lines while doing work for a building on Carroll Street and Albany Avenue.
“We arrived here to fix it as soon as we got the call,” Wood said at 6:00 pm.
The repairs should take another hour and a half to two hours, he estimated.
The hours-long outage created difficulties for many businesses, including electronics retailer Sterling Electronics, who said they have a long list of customers’ credit card numbers which they will process when the service is restored.
Store manager Rafi Greenstein said that after today’s experience, they plan to sign up for “a smart phone based payment system like Square Payments, so we are prepared in the event of another internet outage.”
Not the first time this has happened. IIRC, last time it lasted a long time & in the winter, Montgomery street was without power for days! Does Con Ed really give refunds & discounts for problems they cause?
