Two weeks of back and forth discussions and meetings over how the New York City Department of Sanitation should handle the garbage collection in the Crown Heights neighborhood has resulted in a final and united recommendation.
On Thursday, April 2nd, a meeting was held at Community Board 9 offices to discuss solutions for garbage collection during the winter months. Prompting the meeting was the handling of the waste during this past winter, when garbage was unable to be collected from local alleys for some 6 weeks.
At one point, there were hundreds of garbage bags piled up behind homes.
Representatives from the Sanitation Department, Pinny Ringel from the Mayor’s Office, the Community District Manager, a representative of City Council Member Laurie Cumbo, the Jewish Community Council and several block associations participated in the meeting.
At the meeting, Sanitation officials offered the community two possible ways to approach Crown Heights garbage pick-ups in the winter:
A. Only on the days when there is heavy snow or ice in the alleys and those passageways become unsafe for garbage pick-ups, residents can place their garbage in front of their homes or at the beginning of the alley.
B. Garbage pick-ups would automatically be switched to the front of the house and only collected from there, beginning from the first Monday in December until mid-March.
There was a visible disagreement among the meeting participants over which option is better for the community.
The block associations, supported by Cumbo’s office, opposed option B, while another advocated for a permanent wintertime solution.
News of the meeting spread, and representatives of 4 block associations and some 75 residents emailed the Mayor’s Community Affairs Unit to express opposition to switching garbage pickup to the front of houses for the entire winter.
At last, representatives and activists representing the Jewish community reached a mutual position.
“After numerous consultations, including all the people who were active during the storm last year on this issue, it seems that option A is the preferred option — no fixed dates. We need to work on collecting block email lists so we can get out timely notifications and be sure everyone sees them,” The Crown Heights Jewish Community Council said.
Due to the tremendous response, Sanitation has agreed that garbage collection will remain in the alleys next winter. Residents will have the option of bringing the garbage to the front of the house or beginning of the alleys for collection only on the days when alleyways are unsafe for garbage pick-ups.
“Sanitation made the right choice,” said community activist Yaacov Behrman. “Garbage pickup in front of the house would severely mar the the beauty of the blocks, turning our lovely streets–some of the nicest blocks in the neighborhood, into streets made unkempt and ugly by garbage, affecting our quality of life.”
please get a group together and hire a plow during deep snow
Make garbage bins mandatory and outfit the trucks to pick them up with a forklift. now you can put your garbage IFO the house without “making it ugly”
What’s the big deal about bringing your garbage to the curb? We don’t have a back alley and our garbage sits in cans on the side of our house. The sanitation picks up from the front of our house year round.
to #7 Montgomery street i live on crown street between kingston and brooklyn and we have a block association for montgomery and crown streets and BH this year right after they picked up the garbage on shabbos and the alley was a total disaster. on sunday there was a crew of 5 workers and the alley was swept and made clean we also had the alley repaved a few years ago .. so instead of complaining organize you r block and for our block a shout out to menchem levy for getting the job done and to yaakov behrman for… Read more »
if your block cares
Plow the alley so the snow does not accumulate
A simple small truck with a plow can do this
WE HAVE TO THANK YAACOV BERMAN FOR STEPPING UP TO THE PLATE, AND BEING INSTRUMENTAL IN NEGATING THE CONCESSION MADE BY ONE OF THE CHJCC MEMBERS TO AGREE TO OPTION B. IT IS LUDICROUS FOR SOMEONE TO AGREE TO OPTION B WHEN THEY THEMSELF DO NOT LIVE ON A BLOCK WITH AN ALLEY BEHIND. AS FAR AS THE PERSON THAT MADE A COMMENT ( # 4) THAT PERSON IS DEFINITELY CONFUSED AND SHOULD SEEK REMEDIAL HELP. THE BLOCKS THAT HAVE ALLEYS BEHIND ENJOY A GREAT ENHANCEMENT TO THE BEAUTY OF THEIR BLOCKS, AS GARBAGE SITTING IN FRONT OF HOUSES IS… Read more »
I share the alley between Carroll Crown Brooklyn New York ave and thanks to several frum homeowners who managed to form an association which collects $100 annually from each homeowner (over 75% pay) our alley is cleaned on a monthly basis. Even so that during the winter snow they paid to have workers bring baggs of garbage to the avenues for picup when it was possible. Our neighborhood is the rebbies and how we maintain its cleanliness is a reflection of how we respect the rebbie. We have people from all over the world coming to visit CH and it’s… Read more »
Good going Yaacov Behrman! Grateful for your dedication and results.
The back of our houses are always a disgusting mess of garbage that’s just thrown there without any care or consideration. We have to steer our car around torn bags, broken bottles and loose garbage, which all remain there forever, I never see a Crown St. homeowner making sure the back of his house is as presentable as the front of his house. We make sure our garbage is neat and contained in the front of our house. Why can’t the homeowners in back of our house be more considerate and take a look at how it looks behind their… Read more »
This winter it was a disaster with the garbage! I live on a street right off Kingston and the garbage wasn’t picked up for weeks!! Hopefully next year this new system will work better for all of us.
why did they give me a ticket because there was garbage on the street in front of my house when they themselves did not fully pick up ALL the garbage from the sidewalks when they were able to get to it after the snow ? alot of the garbage scattered all over the street and it left a mess. its NOT fair. it is THEIR FAULT!!!
Placing garbage by the curb seems the most sensible option when the alley ways are inaccessible due to snow and ice. Oy nebech on marring the beauty of the streets that the one percenters enjoy. The rest of us manage to deal.
yaakov, it was great working with you. that statement should not defer any credit due to you. you worked hard, and we all won! on to the next project…… more trees, more lighting, more benches, and more speed bumps…. we need more cops in our pct, especially in the night hours… if the community knew how few cops are actually on duty at night, they would run to the hills. if u need me, you know my number. again, thank you!
ישר כח!!
So nice that you won the support of vetaren asken Eli Cohen!
Thanks for making option 2 the rule of the law!!!
