Rabbi Hershy Stolik, his wife Sheva, and their three children will be setting out as Shluchim at the California Institute of Technology, better known as Caltech University.
They will be welcomed by Rabbi Chaim Hanoka, Head Shliach of Pasedena, California, where the private research university renowned for its contributions in engineering and science is located.
The Shluchim set out to their new shlichus outpost with much excitement, with fire in their hearts — and with many unanswered questions.
“How long will it take until we meet Jews who will appreciate the fact that Chabad has come to bring light to their lives?” is a question that is uppermost in their minds.
Rabbi Stolik returned from his pilot trip to Caltech University in Pasadena, California to find that question already answered.
The following message waited for him in his email inbox:
“I was thrilled to hear that you and your family are considering moving to the CalTech area… our dinners have garnered a fair amount of interest, and I’d love to widen our impact.
“This seems the perfect time to strengthen Jewish life at Caltech. So much of what we do at CalTech — so much of science — is the legacy of some good Jew. I think CalTech is ready to celebrate that legacy.
“I appreciate from firsthand experience how a Chabad house and a campus can thrive together through my experiences at —[other Campus Chabad Houses…].
“Thank you for your interest in our community. I hope you and your family will join us!”
Hershy recalls how he was warmly welcomed by Jewish students and professors when he was introduced to members of Caltech’s faculty by Rabbi Chaim Hanoka.
