There was standing room only as women and girls came to the Bais Yaakov Ohel Sarah hall, a mere 20 minute drive from Crown Heights, to witness a most amazing production put on by the BYOS elementary students.
Words cannot describe the professionalism with which these young children performed. “I thought I was at a high school production,” were the words of many attendees. “What a powerful message this play had.” said numerous others. “I was so impressed by the warmth all the girls had between one another and the affection with which the principals and staff members treated each and every girl.”
The praise that everyone had was unanimous; Bais Yaakov Ohel Sarah is instilling in its students the foundations for a true Torah life. It is a school filled with love and achdus and the ratzon to bring kedusha into our everyday lives.
Their play, titled “Believe,” was based on the life of Maryasha Garelik/Shagalov.
What better way can they inspire their students and audience than with a story that actually took place with real heroes. It was a story that portrayed the hardships of growing up in communist Russia, when Jews were not allowed to practice any sort of religion, where there was hunger, uncertainty and fear all around. It was a story that tugged at everyone’s heartstrings for we all go through struggles in life but it is how we deal with them that affect the outcome.
What chizuk the students got when they met the actual people they were portraying for they were sitting in the audience watching the beautiful performance that brought to tears to their eyes. These were the children that stayed strong and never once lost faith in Hashem. These were the girls that held steadfast to their religion no matter what. These are the women that have succeeded against all odds to raise beautiful frum, yideshe families. Not only did they come, but many Shagalov family members as well. How beautiful and uplifting it was when they came on stage and stood together with the students that were portraying them for a momentous picture.
“Our reason for making such an elaborate production,” said Mrs. Sarah Mendelsohn, principal of Bais Yaakov Ohel Sarah “Is for many reasons. First of all it is to bring out creativity and self-confidence in our girls and for them to shine, whether in drama, dance, choir, helping with props and more. To also bring a closeness between all the students no matter what age they are. Training the girls to work together and to respect each other is something I feel is very important to instill in our students. And last but not least to instill in our students the power to stay strong, the strength to not cave in to outside influences and the ability to always BELIEVE and to raise generations of frumerlicheyidden so that we all will be able to see the coming of Moshiach in our days.”
It was then that Mrs. Mendelsohn told me some very exciting news for Bais Yaakov Ohel Sarah.
“It is with much gratitude to Hashem that Bais Yaakov Ohel Sarah is I’H opening a high school for the coming 2015 – 2016 school year.”
I was very happy to hear this news because what I saw on January 18th, at the Bais Yaakov Ohel Sarah production was something so special, something that needs to be continued, something that will have such a positive effect on their present student, their future students and on generations to come.
Bais Yaakov Ohel Sarah attracts a wide range of student from Flatbush, Mill Basin, Crown Heights, Boro Park, Far Rockaway and Staten Island.

Every Lubavitch school should start making plays of our real life heroes, who lived life with true mesiras nefesh
So special for all those related !!!
What a breadth of fresh air, a school that is quietly instilling in their students a true sense of what a Bas Yisroel is, and all that without any fanfare.
May the adminstration go maychayil el choyil, with the school growing both physically and spiritually.
Lots of hatzlocha

a pity we didn’t know about it. Any chance of it being performed in Crown Heights? Remembering Rebbetzin Mariasha A”H,and how we would love listening to her telling about her life, it would be wonderful to see this production. She is surely smiling as she sees her family KA”H, leShem uleTiferes. Gezunt and Nachas to all.
i dont believe it u guys made such a great production i luv ur school and the girls there r adorable!!!
i have never seen a production that had the actual people that the play was about, there live!
This is great, and the school sounds wonderful.
Its so unbelievable how these girls are reenacting the lives throughout the beginning of 19-20th century of the former Soviet Union during the horrible life condition of the Jewish people. They are now going to understand what their ancestors went through, and where they came from. They are reliving the life of true heroes while they are reenacting their lives. This is much more effective than history classes. WOW! Good Job OHEL SARAH!!! SUCH AMAZING CHINNUCH YOU’RE GIVING THESE GIRLS!!!
To actually see it was played out?
