Rabbi Mendy Hecht and select members of the Jewish community joined developer Bruce Ratner, Mayor Bill DeBlasio and numerous dignitaries at a special ground breaking in Pacific Park.
The groundbreaking represents the beginning of an ambitious project to make thousands of affordable housing units available in Brooklyn, where skyrocketing housing costs have crushed working families in recent years.
“This is such an important project,” said Rabbi Hecht, who could be seen shoveling with the developer, ” anyone who knows Brooklyn should realize how badly we need this now.”
At the groundbreaking, Rabbi Hecht pointed out the close proximity of the Chabad House to Mr. Ratner, who was eager to visit the Chabad Jewish Center and “see the operation.”
“This project will be very good for Brooklyn, and I hope especially for the Jewish community,” said Rabbi Hecht. “Jewish families are large families, and everyone knows how difficult it’s becoming for families to make ends meet.”
