Mrs. Luba Zarchi, matriarch of a large Lubavitch family and longtime resident of Crown Heights passed away Tuesday, 3 Kislev, 5775.
She was 94.
Mrs. Luba Michle Zarchi was the daughter of R’ Shlomo and Basya Yente Raskin obm. She was the granddaughter of famed Chossid R’ Bentzion Raskin. She was also the granddaughter of famed Chossid R’ Michel Sherdener, son of the Chossid of the Rebbe Rashab R’ Zalman Sherdener, whose fervent Tehillim was the envy of all Chassidim and were mentioned by the Frierdiker Rebbe in Likkutei Diburim.
Born in Gorki, Russia (today Nizni Novogord), as a young girl growing up under communist rule, Mrs. Zarchi faced many challenges to adhere to her Judaism.
Government requirements said she must attend school on Shabbos or her parents faced threats of imprisonment. When she could not give excuses anymore and was forced to attend, she walked miles to and from school. She would come up with excuses not to do writing or schoolwork as well, wrapping her arms in bandages or a cast, and other times bringing doctor’s notes stating she was sick.
She married R’ Meir Zarchi OBM, a brilliant scholar in both Gemarah and Chassidus, and after their marriage, they finally escaped Russia along with their child in 1946.
In order to escape, the two had to travel separately and faced grave danger, finally reuniting in Germany.
Once they settled in New York, the Zarchis were known for their open house, hosting many prominent Rabbonim and other visitors from Russia, Europe and all around the world when they arrived on US shores.
Mrs. Zarchi, who was known for her brilliant photographic memory, was always strong and never gave up hope, even after her husband’s untimely death at the age of 59.
An aristocratic woman of style and taste who was also firmly grounded in a life of Torah and Chassidus, she raised generations of Chassidim and G-d-fearing Jews, many of whom are Shluchim around the world.
She is survived by her children, Rabbi Shloma Zarchi – Crown Heights; Rabbi Tzvi Hirsch Zarchi – Crown Heights; Mrs. Gittel Fischer – Jerusalem, Israel; and Mrs. Leah Kalmenson – Crown Heights.

Saddened to wake up to this news. Mrs Zarchi A”H was blessed with incomparable children who were devoted to her and took great care of her till the end. She was a very special lady.
Hamokom Yenachem Eschem B’soch Sharai Aevlei Tzion V’yerushalaim.
I remember Mrs. Zarchi in the bungalow colony 20 years ago, or so. I was wheeling one of my grandchildren, on a fast day, and she asked me, “Es iz nishto emitser andersh tsu ton dos?” and I answered, “Ich bin der emitzer”! She was concerned about everyone’s comfort and really cared – so ibergegeben – truly to be admired and to emulate. May she be a gutte betterin for her wonderful family and for us all.
Dear bubby Luba although we cant see you we know that you are with every one of us. You suffered enough we aren’t complaining you deserve your rest even if we are sad may your soul go straight up which it will because you were very special
love your great-granddaughter
What comment 10 wrote is so true. Chanie was an amazing granddaughter and took such good care of her bubby Luba, who in turn really loved chanie.
May we all hear only good news
She was the pinnacle of kindness, always a kind word to share.

I would like to give a shout out to bubby Lubas grand daughter Chanie Zweibel who brought her supper and visited her every single day for years! A true example!!!
I was lucky to know “Bubby Luba” (as she was known by her family).
She was very wise and sharp and had an incredible memory. She knew everyone’s family tree, and had beautiful story’s about her Zaide Reb Michel, and her relatives from the Raskin side.
Her family really loved her and respected her, and would all come visit her on Shabbos.
It’s really sad when the last of a generation leave us. She will be missed.
