Rabbi Aizik and Brochie Katzman (nee Gurkow), who were appointed two weeks ago as Shluchim to Stoughton, MA, have suffered a great setback after a fire damaged their home.
The morning after finding out they were appointed Shluchim to Stoughton, a fire broke out in the apartment above their residence.
Hearing loud thumping and a blaring fire alarm, they lifted their 7-month-old daughter and quickly evacuated the apartment.
“Outside, in the smoke-filled stairwell, we met our neighbor, who lives with her mother in the apartment above,” Katzman told COLlive. “She said the fire had spread quickly from a frying pan to the couch, and then everywhere. Her mother had been burned, so we called 911.”
7 fire companies rushed to the three-alarm fire, which was soon under control, but great damage had already been done.
“The smoke and fire rendered the building uninhabitable,” says Katzman. “Much of our property was damaged and will need to be replaced.”
Despite the devastating fire so soon after beginning their Shlichus, the Katzmans have resolved not to give up.
“We are committed to continuing the Rebbe’s Shlichus despite the unfortunate interruption from such a disaster,” says Katzman.
The Katzmans are reaching out to the Chabad community for help in rebuilding and continuing their Shlichus.
. . . that the Katzman family escaped safely! May the mother who was burned have a speedy recovery without scars.
A note about kitchen safety: We must always be alert — flammable objects on or near the stove top; hot oil; and untended aluminum foil or pots and pans (even empty) or left on a hot burner have a 1200 F flash point and will explode! This could be an opportunity for us to review
Thank you all for your help and kind wishes. May Hashem give you all riches without having a fire.
I am not sure, but I assume that if they are taking money, didn’t have insurance. I have worked in insurance for 20 years. If there isn’t anything peculiar, any insurance company will pay for out of pocket expenses virtually immediately (relocation, food, etc.) and shortly thereafter pay to replace what was lost. It is easy to say that insurance companies don’t pay. The only time they don’t pay right away is when there is something that is not the norm or if the client is not giving documentation to the company. Let me iterate something that I have said… Read more »
Just a thought if the fire started in the above apartment , the owners or tenants should be liable to pay damages to the Katzman’s from their household insurance.
