Americans marked Veterans Day on Tuesday with parades, speeches and military discounts, while in Europe the holiday known as Armistice Day held special meaning in the centennial year of the start of World War I, AP reports.
New York City’s Veterans Day Parade up Fifth Avenue was to feature a float of six military dogs and their handlers, all of whom have served in the U.S. armed forces, the news agency said.
Former NYPD Commissioner Raymond Kelly, who served in the Marines, was chosen as grand marshal of New York’s parade.
In Crown Heights, newly elected New York State Senator Jesse Hamilton came to the Shalom Senior Center on Albany Avenue to present a “Certificate of Recognition” honoring Irving Birnbach, a veteran of World War II.
Birnbach was stationed in Papua, New Guinea, part of a great arc of mountains stretching from Asia and located just south of the equator, 160km north of Australia. During the war he serviced U.S. fighter planes.
Hamilton thanked him for his service to his country and took some time to tour the center with its director Rabbi Shimon Herz and schmooze with its members.

Definitely off to a great start Senator Elect Hamilton.
