Washington (CNN) — A Republican tide ripped the Senate away from Democrats Tuesday, according to CNN projections, giving the GOP full control of Congress and the power to pin down President Barack Obama during his last two years in office.
The thumping win upends the balance of power between the White House and Capitol Hill only six years after Obama’s Democrats swept to power and marginalized Republicans in a rush to reform health care, Wall Street and pass a huge stimulus package.
Now, it’s Democrats who will take the back seat on Capitol Hill, relying mostly on the power of the filibuster to stymie Republicans and keep Obama’s legacy intact.
“For too long, this administration has tried to tell the American people what is good for them and then blame somebody else when their policies didn’t work out,” Mitch McConnell, who is expected to become the next Senate majority leader, said in a victory speech.
House Speaker John Boehner said he is “humbled by the responsibility the American people have placed with us.”
“But this is not a time for celebration,” he said. “It’s time for government to start getting results and implementing solutions to the challenges facing our country, starting with our still-struggling economy.
In New York, Gov. Andrew Cuomo has defeated Republican challenger Rob Astorino Tuesday, making him the first Democratic governor since his father to win re-election in New York.
“The bright sunlight of opportunity shines in places that were too long in the shadows,” Cuomo told supporters at a New York City hotel. He added: “We are just getting started.”
In Brooklyn, returning incumbent Dov Hikind was elected to office for the 17th consecutive time, VIN News reported.
Residents of Brooklyn’s 48th Assembly District came out in droves to vote in today’s high profile election, with 88% of the vote counted, Hikind leads Caller 77% by 23%.
Hikind, who has run unopposed for years, was challenged by real estate developer Nachman Caller in a hotly contested battle to represent residents of Borough Park, Mapleton and parts of Midwood.
In the race for State Senator of Brooklyn’s 20th District, Democrat Jesse Hamilton received 84% of the vote with 90% of the vote counted, defeating Crown Heights resident Mendy Raitport.
few people realize that the guy is also a yid
Hope for the best …
BS”D
I’m fracking out that Cuomo won again
1) Cuomo won a non resounding victory even with a $40 million dollar advantage over the Republican.
2) Jesse Hamilton will represent us correctly in the Senate especially with a GOP majority, he’ll be more likely to vote with his Lubavitcher and other Religious constituents in mind.
Now if my fellow Crown Heighter’s can actually start registering to vote and make it to the polls.
