As reported previously on COLlive.com, Crown Heights is soon to join the ranks of the dozens of communities who have a held a challah baking unity event. Also known as a Mega Challah Bake or Super Big Challah Bake, these events have proven enormously successful, bringing together hundreds, and even thousands of women to unite in performing a beautiful mitzvah traditionally bestowed upon women.
The Crown Heights Grand Challah Bake, to be held on Wednesday, Chof-vov Cheshvan, November 19 in the Oholei Torah Ballroom is sure to draw a large crowd. To accommodate the maximum amount of participants, organizers chose the largest venues possible, and are also requiring pre-registration for the event.
In addition to floury fun, and a challah braiding demonstration, the event is highlighted with the presence of Mrs. Esther Vilenkin, renowned shlucha and educator who will speak on the topic of “Rising Above- Bringing Blessings Through Bread”, about the deeper meaning of Hafrashas Challah. Her presentation is sure to give insight and inspiration to a mitzva that is known to bring powerful blessing and holds many segulos.
Challah baking is known to be an enjoyable, fulfilling task. Watching the dough take form, rise, and shaping the loaves; brushing on golden egg and inhaling the wonderful fragrance of freshly baked bread give meaning to a labor that is also a reward. Women are invited to come participate in the Grand Challah Bake as we create unity, glean inspiration and of course, create Challah.
The timing of this event also marks 40 years since the Rebbe established the Mivtza Neshe”k campaign, making this is a highly propitious time to celebrate the mitzva of challah, both mitzvos being specifically attributed to women.” Forty years later, increasing numbers of Shabbos candles continue to light up the world in preparation for the coming of Moshiach, and the Grand Challah Bake draws upon this energy to unite women in another beloved mitzvah.
To be a part of this first-time-ever event, participants are asked to register at grandchallahbake.com. Seats are selling fast. There will be no payment received at the door and seating is limited. Once the quota has been met, registration will close.
The Grand Challah Bake is being made possible through the generosity of Beis Shmuel, Mei Chaya Mushka, COLlive, N’Shei Chabad and an anonymous donor who is donating in the zchus for those who are waiting to be blessed with children. The evening is dedicated l’ilui nishmas Miriam bas Moshe Yackov Hakohen.
