A Chabad-run eatery in Iowa was listed as one of the “Ten Best Kosher Delis in North America,” a list compiled by the Jewish cultural website Shalom Life.
Ranked as #10 was Maccabee’s Kosher Deli in Des Moines, located on the ground floor of the 2-story Lubavitch of Iowa Torah Center, under the directorship of Shluchim Rabbi Yossi and Chana Jacobson.
“Maccabee’s Deli was founded as a project of the Judaic Resource Center of Iowa. It offers standard kosher deli fare the New York way, as they put it, adding that ‘Nowhere outside of New York do people expect to get hot pastrami on rye the Jewish way, well, we’ve got it.’ They sure do. Make sure to try their kosher salami,” the listing said.
“It’s a big thing for a lot of people, it has a good, clean flavor,” says the Brooklyn born Rabbi Jacobson about the restaurant in the Kingman Place Historic District.
Typical to out-of-the-way Jewish communities, Maccabee sells all that can be sold. There’s the deli counter and sit-down options, but also kosher cheeses, groceries and challah for Shabbos. And they have a full line of Judaica gifts and books.
Their slogan is “You Want It, We Have It.” That also includes election voters.
In the 2012 presidential run, Republican contender Newt Gingrich stopped by Maccabee to meet with local Jewish community members. “We cannot welcome candidates in a shul or (non-for-profit) organization, but our deli is a neutral location,” Jacobson told COLlive.com.
But unlike a report that Gingrich was gaining weight from his stops at food establishments, he didn’t enjoy the best that the deli has to offer.
“He spent 45 minutes with us. And when he left we gave him a bagel and cream cheese for the way,” Rabbi Jacobson said.
Why not lox?
“At 10:45 AM, he said it was too early for lox…”
