To our fellow community members,
“ורחובות העיר ימלאו ילדים וילדות משחקים” “And the streets of the city shall be filled, with boys and girls playing in its streets.” (Zecharyeh)
Just a short ten years ago, a local resident parenting a child with special needs, may not have dreamed of bearing witness to that which took place two weeks ago. Over two thousand members of our community came out to welcome a new Torah and celebrate with Boruch Shneur Chein and the children in our community that have special needs.
Abilities did not matter on that day, young and old, children and adults, teachers and students. People from across the spectrum of our community. Everyone joined together. Stigmas fell away as everyone joined in song and dance. The reminder that we are one people, one community, was felt strongly, nothing else mattered! The throngs of people that attended this Siyum Sefer Torah, testified that ours is a neighborhood that welcomes, loves and cherishes children of ALL abilities. The energy that was running through the streets was tangible and for just a few moments, all differences fell to the side. Though still in Galus, we experienced an apocalyptic moment.
The Hachnosas Sefer Torah has left us inspired. Our work is far from done but after ten years, we can most definitely say that the seeds that were planted by the Friendship Circle are slowly blossoming and blooming.
It takes a village to raise a child, how much more so when speaking of a child with special needs. We know that you, and the residents of our “village” were touched by this Sefer Torah dedication. Let this inspiration translate into supporting The Friendship Circle, enabling us to continue our dear and sacred mission.
