Hurricane Odile, the most powerful ever to strike the Baja California peninsula of Mexico, rammed into the luxury resorts of Cabo San Lucas on Monday — smashing windows, flooding roads, causing parts of hotels to collapse and injuring at least 135 people.
Tourists and local residents emerged from both shelters and once-gleaming buildings to assess the damage after the storm roared through as a Category 3 packing 125-mph wind.
Homes, stores and resorts along Los Cabos’ famed hotel row all suffered severe damage, with room windows shattered, facades crumbled and lobbies full of debris.
On Tuesday, Baja California, Mexico Shliach Rabbi Mendel Polichenco expressed concern for the welfare of Shluchim Benny and Sonia Hershcovich in Cabo, after losing contact with them.
As local airports are closed, a caravan was assembled to drive the 20 hours down to the shluchim in Cabo and La Paz from the San Diego border with material such as electrical generators, food supplies, and flood abatement equipment.
Early Tuesday morning, Rabbi Polichenco reported:
I have Just returned from Tijuana with my wife Dini, we had to cross the border in a caravan of 3 cars since there is a restriction on how much you can take from US to Mexico.
After arriving to the Chabad House in Tijuana, we loaded everything (2 heavy duty generators, solar power chargers, hundreds of pounds of meat and chicken, large amount of drinking water, many foods that don’t require refrigeration and jerry cans full of gas) into a heavy duty 4×4 pickup truck, the only type of vehicle that can make it to Cabo now with the current road conditions.
Larry Barnes and John Krasner from Chabad Without Borders, volunteered for the 20 hour drive to bring much needed supplies to the shluchim Rabbi Benny and Sonia Hershcovich in Cabo and Rabbi Alexander and Esty Piekarski in La Paz. We daven to Hashem that they arrive safe and fast.
We have not yet received any donations to cover the more than $5000 cost of this effort.
