Jesse Hamilton will be the Democratic nominee to fill the New York State Senate seat, representing the Crown Heights neighborhood in Brooklyn and the 20th District.
With 95.2% of precincts reporting on Tuesday in the heavily Democratic affiliated area, Hamilton enjoyed a wide lead of 64.9% in the ballots (8,979 votes).
His opponent Rubain Dorancy, a relatively new face in local politics, has only received 29.9% (4,134 votes). A third candidate Guillermo Philpotts got 5.2%.
Support for the two main candidates has pitted some of the known figures in New York political arena. Even among the politically active Jewish residents, there was support for both Hamilton and Dorancy.
Hamilton, 51, had the backing of Eric Adams, the Brooklyn Borough President, who vacated the Senate seat to take his current post, as well as New York City Council speaker Melissa Mark-Viverito.
Coming out in support of Dorancy, 43, was Mayor Bill de Blasio, Congresswoman Yvette Clarke (D-NY9) and Congressman Hakeem Jeffries (NY-8).
In the Jewish community, Avi Lesches, Shlomie Hecht and Sruly Clapman of the Crown Heights Political Club called to vote for Dorancy, citing the need for a representative who can navigate government bureaucracy and help with rising costs of living and tuition.
On the other side, Yaacov Behrman of the Jewish Future Alliance and friends backed Hamilton. Admitting that “the State Senate has limited power,” he said that Hamilton was a friend who “went well beyond his job requirements and was active in helping the Jewish community in our time of need.”
Upon learning the results, Councilman David Greenfield tweeted: “Big victory for Brooklyn Dems & @BPEricAdams as Jesse Hamilton wins his former Senate seat. Jesse will make a great Senator!”
The New York Times reported that “as no Republican is running, the winner of the primary will become senator.”
However, Crown Heights meat store owner Mendy Raitport was registered to run on the Conservative ticket in the November 2014 general election.

Look, I’m glad Hamilton won too, only because we’re better off without DiBlasio’s guy, and because his unauthorized use of the picture of the Shluchim to claim support shows what kind of unethical person he is.
But don’t kid yourself that Hamilton’s putting “WWMN” on a poster is anything more than pandering too. Remember: הוו זהירין ברשות, שאין מקרבין לו לאדם אלא לצורך עצמם.
