Haifa – The Israeli military says a soldier wounded in fighting in the Gaza Strip died Sunday, bringing the Israeli military toll in the recently concluded conflict to 66.
The military says 20-year-old Sergeant Shachar Shalev was wounded on July 23, six days after Israeli ground forces entered the densely populated coastal strip.
Six civilians were also killed on the Israeli side, including one agricultural worker from Thailand.
Shalev had been hospitalized at Rambam Medical Center in Haifa.
The news of Shalev’s death came just two days after IDF Sgt. Netanel Maman, 21, from Gan Yavne, died on Friday morning, succumbing to wounds sustained from a rocket attack last week.
Shalev’s death brings the toll from Operation Protective Edge on the Israeli side to 72, with 65 of them soldiers.
According to Magen David Adom, there were 842 Israeli casualties during the fighting.
Seven civilians were killed by rocket or mortar strikes, 36 were wounded by shrapnel, including 10 who were seriously hurt, six who were moderately wounded and 20 who sustained light wounds.
MDA added that another 33 people were hurt by shattered glass, and that 18 were hurt in traffic accidents that occurred when rocket warning sirens sounded, including one person who was seriously injured. Also, 159 people were injured while running for bomb shelters, and 581 were treated for shock.
