More than 300 people turned out for the Torah dedication ceremony in honor of renowned Rav and Chabad author and philosopher, Rabbi Dr. Jacob Immanuel Schochet z”l in Toronto last weekend.
The Sefer Torah was written and completed to coincide with the first yartzeit of the Rav’s passing, on Chof Av.
The completion of the Torah took place at Beth Joseph Lubavitch of Toronto, where Rabbi Schochet was the Rav for nearly two decades, and dancing and hakofos took to the streets outside.
Rabbi Schochet was one of the great thinkers and authors of Chabad in the last generation. A scholar and extraordinary dynamic speaker, he inspired thousands worldwide with his books and lectures on on the history and philosophy of Chassidism and topical themes of Jewish thought and ethics.
Speakers at the ceremony included Rabbi Schochet’s two sons-in-law, Rabbi Chuni Vogel, head shliach of Delaware, and Rabbi Benny Zippel, head shliach of Utah.
“Throughout his life, Rabbi Schochet touched the lives of great numbers of people in very significant ways through his lectures, books, and leadership,” said Mr. Allan Baum, a member of the Shul who organized the entire event along with his wife Nancy.
“A beautiful crowd attended this joyous event in a great show of respect, love and appreciation for Rabbi Schochet and his family,” Baum added.
