A 1920s brick townhouse in Crown Heights South just may have set a new neighborhood record.
The single-family home, which sold for $999,000 in December, sold again in July for $1,850,000, more than $150,000 above the original asking of $1,695,000.
The home at 1388 Union Street has been well maintained and, according to the listing, is chock full of details including bay windows, original moldings, mirrors and wood paneling, (though all the woodwork is painted). The renovation is very well-done. It’s unclear how much work the flipper actually did on the home given how fast it turned over.
This winter we looked at the incredible price appreciation in Crown Heights North. Is the neighborhood’s southern half about to go through the same price climb, or do you think this is just a very high price for what looks like an exceptional home?
To think someone would pay 2000 bucks a month to rent a disgusting rat filled apt in a dangerous neighbor is funny.
And I know a lot of sheeple like that, but to pay 2 mil.
ROFL
people are complaining that the Yuppies will be moving in and take over ch, I think it is better to have yuppies living here, at least you dont have to worry about them, like you do some of our neighbors
No one owes you a cheaper house or lower rent. Supply and demand. Can’t afford it? Move out. You and your family will be better for it. Sadly, there’s not much good in Crown Heights these days.
Dont forget just bec it sold 4 1.85 doesnt mean the person who sold the house keeps all the $$ there is taxes lawyer fees etc etc but im sure they still walked away with nice $$$.
We do it to ourselves. A fellow yid tries to upgrade his house and wonderful jewish neighbors report him for absolutely no reason, making fictitious claims, bullying, causing tremendous financial hardships to our fellow yidden out of absolute cruelty and jealousy.
wow what a beautiful home
oif alleh yiddishe kinder gezugt
thank your for sharing
Real mentchlich Anash starting to develop there. Was just there for a shabbos and excellent value for housing
Dachtzich mir, is not the place for a geshmake farbrengen, or a bissele yabtzik on erev shabbos… but nice!
Nice, but I thought that we are not into Gashmius. I am glad that I left Crown Heights many years ago. For 1/3rd of that price you get a nice house in many other Jewish communities.
And not a penny less than 1.85 million will do?
Hashem sees everything and is the True Judge.
I heard that Lauderhill has a very nice Chabad community
I totally agree with your feelings, but I would go a step further. EVERYONE in our community who has profited by taking advantage of or behaved immoraly or illegaly to their neighbors should choke on their money. There are too many here who are suffering because of the greed of others.
Go down to Remsen, East 91st, East 92nd…smart young couples are buying there now, catching the decent prices before everything goes up. There are already quite a few couples there and there’s a shul, and condos going up.
don’t get too stuck here with this petty mishagas, so leave….pretty soon, ISIS and other virulent anti-semitism is becoming so pervasive in Europe and soon the States.. lovely modest homes (still very affordable) in the north and other areas of the country awaits you in eretz ha kodesh..and if you have good job skills..you will manage with less goshmius, more ruchnius; less is better in the long run for you and your families;
We all did it our self, we brought crime down and the yuppies are willing to move into CH. If petty crime would go up then the they will leave or at least stop looking to live in CH. Then prices will drop
to 15:
“and i’m sure that soon enough OUR community will benefit from his chesed. ”
I hope you introduce him to your kids, and impress on them how big of a baal tzedoko he is. so they have who to looke up to.
i heard a house on Carroll was sold for 1.2 million, so it seems these are the prices people are going ot have to pay to buy a house in crown hts. if they can afford it why not!
Jewish outsiders means more opportunity for for mivtoim and sharing ahavas yisroel
Why pay millions when you can have a home with a pool and a 2 car garage in beautiful Walnut Creek, near Hollywood, Florida—not to mention no more miserable winters and most importantly—- wonderful schluchim and community–Check it out!
All the rest is talk without thought
You are ready to retire. For the past twenty years you were subsidizing the rent of your tenant who barely ever paid on time, having a large family costing you dearly for water and fuel. Now you want to sell and are being offered below market value for your home, and only have interested buyers if the house is delivered empty…. You are forced to buyout your tenant, who miraculously can now afford to rent a condo for more than three times the rent you were paid… Where would your retirement funds come from? What would you do?
Can do with some nice bright colors.
I recommend Modway Furniture 🙂
but it should really have some more color- especially the bedroom. all that white- its blinding.
they bought this with their money from their house on sterling place which sold for double… so not too shabby!
To all those complaining about the prices going up, y’all are very narrow minded, put yourself in a landlords shoes, buy high, rent high. its called business.
for that price does it sing a song to you when you walk in?
wheres the pool and tennis courts?
a few years a go some body told me that she wanted to sell her house for a high price in kfar chabad israel, the rav of the kfar didnt let, whats going on in the rabbi schuna ,?our people cant a foord to buy houses in such high prices ,no body want that not jewish people will come in right? so please dont sell it in such a high prices or the vahad or other people should gett invalved .
BS”D the flipper should choke on the money,
in his community he cannot do this so he comes here,
we have no leadership, wake up as no young people can afford to live here any longer and are exiting, the leaders of the CC should resign in mase-they can take one last pic pose before doing so
Great affordable houses in Oak Park. Great anash Shul and community in Oak Park.
Excellen Chabad chinuch for boys and girls from 3 to 18
25 years ago you all in CH made a revolution and kicked out pepole who cared.
Now enjoy what your stuck with
I love it
It’s white paint, some light rugs and curtains, sparse furniture and a little nice flooring in the kitchen. Other than that it’s pretty much like all the other homes in CH. Someone was taken for a ride..
thats real nice of you! real ahavas yisroel, who are you to judge?! maybe they give lots of money to tzodako?! why cant someone live nicely if they can afford it?!
Common sense-if you can’t afford the mortgage, you don’t buy the house in the first place!
All l this started when Fisher left CH. We need him back ASAP.
Amazing that you are asking for a lawsuit. Something lawyers love to take on.
thought i was looking at the architectural digest
I can get much better for that amount of money with a
Yiddishen Taam designed for a Chassishe family.
This is an alarming article about how selfish, money grubbing individuals are willing to destroy whatever vestige of affordable housing is left in this community so they can become super wealthy. From my perspective, I hope all their wealth goes down the drain, especially as pertains the frum builders who wouldn’t dare do this in their own neighborhoods. It wouldn’t surprise me if they’d literally get burnt out of their money grubbing ventures by incensed neighbors if they ever attempted to do to their neighbors what they’re doing to us. For anybody to whom it matters, go back and reread… Read more »
For all those commenting that the house doesn’t seem warm etc. it’s because when a Realtor is selling a home they want the potential buyer to be able to visualize how the home can look instead of it being bare. Most of the time the furniture is rented.
As for the price, demand dictates that. This home selling at that price doesn’t mean that a run down or even nice apartment will be unduly inflated. May the new owner live in it with happiness and joy.
We have lost our “best families” for decades to shlichus. The best and brightest leave, and the others remain… And now so many young people in our shechuna are R”L off the derech or half off the derech, and what is being done about it and who is there left to do it?
the answer is to start working ( start a business ) and make some real $$ instead of kvetching and 2 million would be pocket change and we can actually build a strong community with state of the art mosdos and shuls..
Makes sense but people have to be willing to put community before huge amounts of money. A little less money but the merit of building our community and keeping it safe for us. Whether or not this house was sold to a Jew- and the sellers have the right to do whatever they want- I see something going on that is leading to the demise of a community unless we each make some personal decisions now. Please do not be naïve and believe that this is exaggeration. A few minutes of thought about where all this is headed in many… Read more »
Move out of CH. There are lots of communities that are affordable. South Florida is very nice. Houston Texas is VERY affordable and growing quickily.
Not that I’m encouraging anyone to leave CH, but if you must–seriously conside Philly! You can buy a town home, totally renovated, for $150,000. finished basement, etc. great school, heimishe community, ss close to NY.
you heard it first here! Money created our rabonnim to fight!! you think selling houses to goyim wont be different..watch and see lubabs selling and moving and selling houses to non lubabs for 1.8 it will look like Brooklyn heights in 10 years
from housing to shidduchim to schooling all is lies and all is a farce and especially the loshon hara people talk behind your back I am fed up
Hardly any room for bookcases, dressers
Certainly not set up by a Yid! Nor for a Yid!
We all need money but to agree to buy at such a price is disgusting. The rest of do suffer… I am a homeowner and life is very tuff, but to be so self centered???? maybe the buyer’s not a yid ( a yid always wants a discount) This community is looking better and better these days to the outsiders….
The just moved out of CH to Cedarhurst. You can rent a 1700 sq home for less then a 2 bedroom in CH and you have a huge back yard, Chabad shul, city paid busing to CH everyday to all schools (over 30 lubavitcher kids travel daily and the parks are full of yidden shabbos. Get out of CH.
I don’t know whose worse the thieves who are ripping everyone off( including some of the r.e. agents or the people that are stupid enough & gullible enough etc. to buy it. I was taking with someone Friday night about this & he mentioned to me That when someone wrote into the Rebbe many years ago about buying a particular house at a certain price The Rebbe answered him not to buy the house as the price was too expensive the person had the Chutzpah to ask the Rebbe & comment why not I can afford it? The Rebbe answered… Read more »
The owner is very VERY wealthy (inter-married 🙁 Jewish hedge fund manager (i’m talking net worth of well north of a BILLION) He’s a tremendous baal chesed and i’m sure that soon enough OUR community will benefit from his chesed.
(he just sold his upper East Side condo for 3.2 Million, 1.8 Million is a joke for him. and now you know the rest of the story.. :))
he probably paid cash 🙂
The writer of this article for Brownstoner is obviously clueless that Crown Heights South has been booming now for quite some time now.
If you want to buy a home or condo, the south might be your best option right now before it too becomes unaffordable.
were loosing our best families who are moving to other comunities cause of the housing escalating prices, simply unfair, people wake up! agree with 1
I’ll buy it for $ 2 mil. And the next door as well.
Doesn’t seem very warm to me.
Sory, but not to giive an ein hara, but what if the new owner cant afford the mortgage?????
Stunning modern and clean. I love. It has structure of brownstone but isn’t dark and gloomy beautiful
what I can get for our much nicer home that we’re interested in selling on a great quite block on crown st. between brooklyn and ny ave.
serious interested parties can e-mail me: [email protected]
did they dump whitewash over mold?
Someone has good taste (but a splash of color here & there would be nice.)
furnished by ikea? lost all beauty and graciousness of a brownstone..crazy prices..
My fellow chasidim, wake up! We are destroying the neighberhood with our own hands. landlords, rent to fellow jews. Help them out, if there are problems , write in the lease that you will take them to court , din torah etc. Our people can not afford park slope prices. Rezoning empire just means more buildings for other chasidic developers to build for yuppies. They know here has no leadership so they can drag up prices and pritzus here. They wouldnt do this in their own neighberhood. We must stand up !!! Next to market place and across from mosdoth… Read more »
