Two American rabbis have hit the road in a mobile synagogue to connect with Jewish people living in regional Australia.

Zalmy Mochkin and Moishe Wilschanski are visiting Mount Gambier along their travels around Australia, reaching out to those in the community for a chat, prayer or to answer questions they may have.

One of the cardinal tenants of Judaism is that all Jewish people are “one” regardless of geographic distance and every individual has a right to learn and participate in their living heritage.

They aim to bring Judaism into the 21st Century by combining technology, positivity and religion, while travelling in their kosher camper van fully equipped for long-term travel.

During their time in Australia they are documenting their adventures on social media.

“We are trying to spread our message with a smile,” Mr Mochkin said.

“Simplicity and good energy spread fast and that is what we aim to do during our time here.”

The Chabad of Rural And Regional Australia toured recently promoting religious peace and knowledge.

Rabbi Yosef Kagan from Miami and Rabbi Srolik Winner from New York travelled to Australia as part of the Chabad of RARA annual tour.

The representatives visit almost 100 rural towns across the country.

The pair said many Jewish communities were cut-off from access to religious communities because of where they lived.

The pair had visited towns such as Daylesford, Maldon and Gisborne on their way to Bendigo.

Rabbi Kagan said the old religions had a lot to offer modern society.

He said the Jewish community wanted to promote peace and understanding.

“Judaism promotes life,” he said.
