A Torah will soon be completed in loving memory of Rabbi Dr. Jacob Immanuel Schochet whose combined erudition and wit inspired generations of scholars, university students, and young Jewish men, women, teenagers and families from all walks of life.
The dedication ceremony will take place Sunday 21 Av – August 17 at Congregation Beth Joseph Lubavitch in Toronto, where the Chabad scholar and academic served for many years.
Marking Rabbi Schochet’s first yartzeit, the event will include the writing of the final letters, a procession, crowning ceremony, music and hakafos dancing and a light meal.
“Writing a Torah in his honor.. serves as a most fitting tribute,” the family said. “If you are one of the many whose soul has been touched by him, please consider sponsoring a dedication opportunity in the writing of this special tribute Sefer Torah.”
Every donor to this special Torah in written in honor of Rabbi Schochet, will have their name inscribed in the “Golden Book” prominently displayed in the sanctuary of Beth Joseph.
“During his lifetime, my father traveled all over the world, and countless Chabad Houses, Lubavitch institutions and the global Jewish communities benefited from his wisdom through his lectures and the many books he authored,” said Rabbi Yitzchok Schochet, Rabbi of the Mill Hill Synagogue in England.
“In appreciation of a lifetime of selfless commitment to Yiddishkeit in general, and Lubavitch in particular, we invite all Chabad institutions to commemorate this special chossid by participating in the writing of this Sefer Torah in a tangible way.”

I live in Toronto. This is the first I am hearing of this. Is it advertized? It should be!
could’t ave worded it better. It’s not giving to a removed cause.
It’s giving back to someone who went around the world in order to write/fix the Jewish neshamos/letters that make up a huge torah scroll.

I like the letter. Ties in the sefer torah with the Rabbi beautifully
We have some of the Rebbe’s finest chassidim and Chassidic scholars in Toronto. Rabbi Schochet was one of the giants and is terribly missed.
we should be rejoined with the Rebbe and all his foot soldiers including Rabbi Shochet and all the other greats Omain

Our dearest and sorely missed Rav Schochet z’l followed and emulated The Rebbe’s teachings, guidance and directives every day and every moment that he was here with us, b’gufo. His entire persona was so eminently, yet vigorously punctuated with the fundamental tenets of our faith and with the burning warmth of The Rebbe’s chassidus and ahavas Yisroel; that message was easily received by me every time I spoke with him, no matter what the subject matter. He led us like a lion-hearted, true manhig b’Yisroel, never swaying from his missions, caring soley for the sake of Hashem and for klal… Read more »
I live outside Toronto but I would like to attend on the day. I met Rabbi Schochet in London Ontario when he delivered a lecture there years ago on cults. I was heavily involved and he helped me return to my authentic roots of ancient Torah and Israel. I owe him a thank you.
I miss you every day. I miss your guidance and your advice, your humor and your inspiration. I know you are looking out for me up above and I hope I am giving you nachas down below. Your loving grandchild.
I posted at the time of his passing that I am “Jewish” today because of rabbi schochet. Ivy league and then meetings in crown heights, they changed my life. He changed my life. I am forever thankful. David Assil

I am so grateful for this opportunity. I was always so touched by this great rabbi. His book mystical concepts gave me my first taste of chassidut and my ability to connect with chabad.
