Plans are underway in Kazakhstan, to mark the 70th yartzeit of the Rebbe‘s father, Rabbi Levi Yitzchok Schneerson OBM, the fearless rabbi of the Ukrainian city of Yekatrinoslav (today, Dnepropetrovsk).
A group of Lubavitch men from the United States is planning to fly in for the occasion and spend Shabbos, the 20th of Av, in Almaty.
Coordinated by Gershon Chaimson of Crown Heights, the group will be departing from JFK airport in New York on Tuesday afternoon, August 12 and and returning on Sunday evening, August 17.
Chaimson said the itinerary will include a trip to the village of Lubavitch in the Russian Smolensk Oblast, the namesake and former headquarters of the Chabad-Lubavitch movement.
In Moscow, participants will be visiting the Museum of the Jewish History in Russia as well as the Lenin Russian State Library to view the sacred books and manuscripts collected by the Chabad Rebbes.
On Thursday evening the group will depart to Almaty (formerly known as Alma Ata) to spend Shabbos there. Rabbi Leibel Groner, the Rebbe’s mazkir, will lead the farbrengens during Shabbos.
