A group of Victorian Rebbetzins attended a professional development seminar on ‘Women in Leadership’, as part of the first of a five session training course of the Rabbinical Council of Victoria.
It was hosted and sponsored by Monash University in Melbourne and facilitated by the university’s MBA Programs Manager, Dr. Jane Sherlock-Holcombe.
Focusing on managing stakeholder relationships and community expectations, Dr. Jane explained that “self-awareness, self-compassion, and the practice of reflecting on one’s own values are critical for leaders within the community.”
One of the key learnings from the first session was that when leaders understand themselves and what they can offer in both their formal and informal roles, they are best able to serve their communities for the greater good.
Rabbi Meir Shlomo Kluwgant, President of the RCV said the Rebbetzins play an integral leadership role in our community.
His wife, Mrs. Yehudis Kluwgant who opened the session, said that Women in leadership roles is not a new thing for the Jewish community. In recent times however, recognition of the role of the Rebbeztin seems to have been diminished; her responsibilities and impact overlooked.
“Tonight is evidence that tide is turning and that the community, the government, and indeed the educational experts and institutions such as Monash University, recognise the value and importance of investing in the talents and capabilities of female leaders within our community,” said Mrs. Kluwgant.
This innovative and inaugural “RCV Rebbetzin Professional Development Training Course” was dedicated to the memory of Chabad Shlucha Mrs. Rivkie Barber OBM, the late wife of Rabbi Yakov Barber, Rabbi of the South Caulfield Hebrew Congregation and Dayan on the Melbourne Beth Din.
“She was a dear friend to many of the Rebbetzins and an exemplar of what it means to be a true and inspiring leader in every aspect,” one participant said.
So well spoken YEHUDIS KLUWGANT! What an inspiration. She’s as beautiful on the inside as she is on the outside.
