The excitement is indescribable: after seven long years, the International Chidon Sefer Hamitzvos is back. The date has been set, and hundreds of children from schools across America, Canada, Australia, and England are getting ready to compete for the honor of representing their schools in the Chidon’s championship tournament.
“There is no need to elaborate on how much it means to the Rebbe that every man, woman, and child study the daily portion of Rambam,” says Rabbi Yerachmiel Benjaminson, executive director of Tzivos Hashem. “Since the Rebbe first initiated the campaign over thirty years ago, tens of thousands of people have been learning Mishneh Torah every day.”
With the re-launch of the International Chidon Sefer Hamitzvos, “Our goal is for every soldier to have a clear understanding of all 613 mitzvos of the Torah as codified by the Rambam, so that for the rest of their lives, when they study the daily shiur, they will be able to understand it properly,” says Rabbi Shimmy Weinbaum, director of Chayolei Tzivos Hashem.
In order to reach this destination, Tzivos Hashem is using an acclaimed curriculum created by the Living Lessons Foundation: a series of workbooks and textbooks explaining each mitzva, its main halachos, and applicable life lessons using colorful images, intuitive layout, and cutting-edge educational methods. The progressive tool is made possible by a grant from The Rohr Family Foundation in loving memory of Mrs. Sara Rohr, a”h.
The 613 Mitzvos are to be completed over a five-year period, from fourth through eighth grade, by learning approximately 125 mitzvos each year.
In addition to the limmud, Tzivos Hashem has re-instituted the Chidon Sefer Hamitzvos as a motivation for chayolim to review the information they are learning and commit the 613 mitzvos to memory.
“It’s well-proven that children who actively participate in the chidon have a lasting knowledge and appreciation for Sefer Hamitzvos, even many years later,” says Mushkie Rosenblum, a 2006 chidon finalist who is now program director of Chayolei Tzivos Hashem.

“There is no question that this limmud and chidon will give the Rebbe tremendous nachas,” affirms Rabbi Moshe Kotlarsky, vice chairman of Merkos L’Inyonei Chinuch. “We are all looking forward to the Chidon Sefer Hamitzvos, where we will see the children shine!”

as a former chidon counselor for 2 year’ss in Miami and in Los Angeles I want to attest to the fascinating amount of knowledge that these young sixth and seventh graders attain. These kids were rattling off answers the question like these Name all mitzvas lo saseh that apply only to a king? Name all mitzvas lo saseh that apply only to the sanhedrin? Name all violations that would incur careis, if done on purpose and a Korbon if done by mistake. .. All in all this program is a massive kiddush Hashem. You should see the faces of litvishe… Read more »
mendel zaltzman!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! u were so little!!!!
if I’m not mistaken, what #2 meant was that the school didn’t incorporate this in the school time. Right before Pesach a letter was sent home informing the parents about this contest, and that they can buy the book and encourage their child to learn at home.
it’s actually just under 30 years, as this acharon shel pesach will be the30th anniversary, but whatever the case is, this is a very great initiative, i was actaly a 2nd place winner in one of the last chidons, and can attest to the super amazing program and material which i am sure has only gotten better! let us mark this acharon shel pesach with a renewed commitment to the rebbe’s takana of rambam together with the renewed chidon!
Yes Montreal it is part of it.
Get your kid learning, and he can join!!
London had a number of winners over the years. Thank you Shimmy for starting it again. I hope London joins.

why is it that our scool is never part of any good programs??? i wish that our school would be prat of this contest
It’s about time to resume the Sefer Hamitzvos contest.
Chabad has to strive to have our children know Halocha and become Bnei Torah. In order to succeed as a Shliach you have to have this knowledge.
Rabbi Yossi Rosenblum was just a Super Master at the Chidon.
