When Lubavitch Elementary School’s 4th grade girls’ classes and 5th grade boys’ classes each decided to organize a grand Ma’os Chitim Chinese Auction, their shared goal was to raise as much money as possible to ease the financial burden on families as they prepare for Pesach.
Working very hard with planning, soliciting monetary and gift donations, purchasing prizes and overseeing ticket sales, the students hoped to—at the very least—reach last year’s success of $7,000.
As the students became more involved in their special project, the atmosphere of chesed in school brought out the best in everyone. And the feeling was contagious.
Parents sent in generous donations, students tapped their ma’aser funds, and friends of the school also gave their support for such an important cause.
Thinking that some of their acquaintances will perhaps be recipients of the auction’s success, students used the opportunity to give tzedakah in a “fun and secretive way.”
When the auction was held and the lucky winners took home their prizes, the biggest surprise to all was the final tally of how much money they had collected. The combined effort of both the boys’ classes and girls’ classes resulted in over $10,000 being raised, enabling them to give more money to more grateful families.
A big yasher koach to all the LEC families and friends for participating in this beautiful mitzvah. A special thank-you goes to Mr. and Mrs. Yankie Andrusier for sponsoring the grand prize of an iPad Air for each of the class auctions.
