Dear Brooklyn,
My name is Aharon and I am 11 years old.
Two years after I was born my parents started taking me all over to many different doctors. After many, many months of all types of tests I had a new name – I wasn’t just a toddler anymore, I was also Autistic.
I know that the past few years have been so hard for my parents. I go to a different school than all my brothers, I sometimes act in ways they don’t understand and I find it so hard to explain how I am feeling to people around me. You see, I, and children like me, don’t necessarily LOOK different so people expect certain things of us and give our families funny looks when we don’t act the ‘right way’.
I and children like me, don’t go to school in Crown Heights and most of us can’t take part in regular things that happen here – we either don’t like how many people come, or the noise or the way people look at us. But then we heard about the Friendship Circle, and now everything is different. The past two years, since we joined, have been filled with love and friendship – ones that I never would have imagined happening otherwise. I have friends come to my house twice a week, prepared with such fun activities, and they play with just ME! We go to Purim and Chanuka parties and I look forward to turning Bar Mitzvah so I can finally have an Aliayh at the FC Minyan. Friendship Circle takes care of my Mommy, my Totty, and all my brothers and sisters.
Friendship Circle is having an Art Event on Sunday, May 4th and I really hope you can come with your family. For the past two months, all of us kids have been doing really fun art projects. Some of us did them at home, some of us did them with Estee Klein and some with Michoel Muchnik, and they are all beautiful!
You know how other kids sell raffle tickets or do read-a-thons to collect money for their schools? Well, we painted these beautiful pictures that have been framed and are going to be selling them. All the money that we raise is going straight to the Friendship Circle. That way, they can continue giving us all these important things. We are all so proud to invite you to something that is happening in THIS community for US by US. It’s our first time putting together a gallery of artwork made by us kids, and my guess is that it will be your first time attending one as well.
If I see you on the street, I may not be able to use my words to invite you, but I really hope you come. Support us children, support our families and support our Friendship Circle.
I will say thank you now because I know that I will see you there!
-Aharon

As a mum of a child with this condition, I applauded you. Society now is understanding that it’s not a few people who are effected by this condition, it’s very common. Please carry on including everyone, autism is everywhere, and it knows no barriers. There has to be inclusion for all, this is what Hashem needs to see from everyone.
