These are strange times and to ridicule each other is pointless. Education is good. Our government infringes on many and more is on the way. Good idea to stick together, don’t you think? I would rather have a Amish friend than a governmental type enemy. B’H

I live near the Lancaster, PA. community and I have never seen them stand for a picture looking at the camera, smiling – never. They don’t do it.

To bash someone who is only just as crazy as you are in the eyes of the secular world is extremely ignorant and insensitive. These people live in partial seclusion from the outside world, to protect themselves and their comminuties from outside influences. This is extremely similar to the way us frum yidden live in Crown Heights in the Lubavitch Community. Disagreeing with thier beliefs is not a good enough reason to make such ridiculous and disgusting remarks againt people who are trying to live their lives in a peaceful and modest way.

??did they horse and buggy all the way here!!?

Amish Facts
April 1, 2009 6:00 am

The Amish do not have mustaches because, in the past, they were a symbol of being a military officer. The Amish are pacifists and do not want to associate themselves with the military in any way, so they shave the mustache. Just like different chassiduses have different minhagim, different groups of Amish have different community standards. By the Lancaster Amish, straw hats are OK in the summer, by some other Amish they aren’t. Also, different communities have different standards about photographs. The Lancaster Amish allow it under some circumstances. It had become more common since the tragic Amish school shooting… Read more »

I Think -
March 31, 2009 11:58 am

I think they are Mennonites – Modern mennonites – just as in jewish circles there are various levels of observances. The same hold true in Amish and Mennonite circles.

Big Difference
March 31, 2009 11:50 am

They are not allowed to have mustaches, and they can wear straw hats. They look more like Abraham Lincoln then Chassidim. How can they allow us to take pictures of them?
