Gedalya Greenzayd, originally from Vinnitsa, Ukraine who was learning in the Smicha program in Morristown, NJ passed away in a tragic car accident on Sunday, Adar 23, 5774.
He was 25.
Born in the ancient Vinnitsa city in central Ukraine, at the age of 10 he was enrolled in a local Yeshiva school and showed a love for the Torah and mitzvos.
An only child, he credited his becoming a Baal Teshuva to his father’s reciting Kaddish for his grandfather at a local Shul, which led to the Rabbi asking his father to become the Gabbai there.
He later moved to Kiev to learn in a Chabad yeshiva, also attending the yeshivas of Bais Duvid of Monsey, Kfar Chabad of Israel, and Ohr Somayach of Monsey.
Most recently he has been learning in Yeshiva Tiferes Bachurim in Morristown while participating in Beis Midrash Menachem, the smicha rabbinical ordination institute at the Rabbinical College of America.
He was described by one of the staff members as “a Baal Midos Tovos, a magnetic and Temimus’dike bochur who was mekarev many bochurim in his quiet way.”
Gedalya also frequently organized and presented a shiur about Moshiach and the Geulah at the Yeshiva. He also tutored many children from the Chabad Cheder, and also gave advice and answered people’s questions over the phone.
While in Tiferes, a known yeshiva for beginners, Greenzayd has been assisting the faculty in teaching and mentoring students. Gedalya would help those in Yeshiva as well as assisted new students in numerous circumstances to come to Yeshiva.
“Just last week Gedalya counseled a young student who is applying to Yeshiva from near his hometown of Kiev,” Rabbi Boruch Hecht told COLlive. “Gedalya spoke to him and spent time advising him by phone how to best make arrangements to come to Yeshiva.”
The levaya will take place tomorrow, sometime during the day, time to be announced. The levaya will pass by 770 on the way to burial in Ukraine.

Video: Gedalya gives a shiur in Moshiach and Geulah:
Ereve shabbos, a man came to a crown heights hotel and was called a meshuganah by the daughter in law of the hotel matron behind his back. The man heard this and so did Hashem.
May God be with you Gedalya, and my prayers are with your parents and your family.
I remember meeting him in Morristown. I could tell he was a special guy right away. I asked him what Gedalya means and he told me, big G-d. My only way of understanding why HaShem would take such a special person from the world is that He’s a big G-d and it’s way beyond comprehension. Gedalya’s soul should have a graceful aliyah

Loving Bochur wrote: B”H What Rabbi Hecht said does not do justice to the character, hasmada, emisdigekite, loving-care, and overall Goodness of Gedalia, may his memory be a Blessing for us all… It’s extremely hard to digest. Gedalia could always be found in his makom kavua in the Zal, straight in plain view of the main glass entrance doors for all to see, and who was available to all those who saw him at any given time! Don’t get me wrong, Gedalia never ceased; he would learn straight through the day and into the night! He was usually in… Read more »

True it was an accident and defenitely from Hashem, however as the Rebbe demanded many times we have to make MACHAA (protest). The community council has to get involved and sue the City. Please call the CHJCC at 718-771-9000- Galina Pindrik x 7731 is in charge of Crime Victims [email protected] otherwise his blood will pushed under the rug.
My heart goes out to the parents, as we desperately yearn for Techias Hamaisim now!! Here’s a suggestion for all of us: Besides the fact that we’re learning about Ahavas Yisroel in Tanya now, it is clear from what I’ve read, that Gedalya loved every Jew unconditionally. Perhaps we can all take on something in the area of Ahavas Yisroel for his Neshama, which could include being careful not to judge others, be careful with our words, taking care of grudges etc. If we all did at least one act in the area of Ahavas Yisroel, it would certainly be… Read more »

I love so much Gedalyah and will miss learning together with you in the Tiferes Zal. We had a truly special kesher because were similar in age and I am an only child just like he was . I will especially miss our interesting conversations in Yiddish during meal times. He was my Yiddish speaking friend in the Yeshiva. Thank you for your kind, comforting words throughout these past few years and your helpful advice on a variety of topics. I will never forget you and I await our reunion when Moshiach comes and we are redeemed from this long… Read more »

Gedalya was an amazing yid. I feel fortunate to have known him. He made a difference in all of our lives here in Morristown and he will be sorely missed. I look forward to seeing him soon with the coming of Moshiach. I want to offer warm condolences to his family.
How can we help towards the Levaya please?
I’m sick…sick…so much tragedy.
Condolences to the family.
‘Moshiach Auchshov!’
Is there a mosad or perhaps is the Yeshiva taking checks for those who want to help. This is very important so those who can and want to help can do so.
Our hearts go out to the parents; we feel their pain immensely.
Please , show this article and the other one to his family , the only last warm words from his life out of home will add some memories and some condolence to his parents ….
may will all be inspired by his goodness and love
WE HAVE TO LOOK AT OURSELVES FROM WITHIN….ESPECIALLY IN THE AREAS OF TZINIUS IN CROWN HEIGHTS, WOMEN COVERING THEIR HAIR AL PI HALOCHO IN PUBLIC AND IN THE HOME, AND NOT TALKING DURING KADDISH
Please tell all post site where can give money to cover LEVAYA ( funeral costs).
You post easy direct way to pay.
Please everyone give.
MOSHIACH NOW
His full hebrew name is Gedalya ben Avraham
Everyone in Crown heights should make it a priority to go to the Levaya, the Yeshivos and high schools should send their students. The shops on Kingston should close for the hour and go to 770. This young Bachurs life and tragic passing should be an inspiration to all of us and be the last Levaya in Gauls.
So tragic. Moshiah now.
Technology was created only for Kidusha, H’Kol Kol Yakov this was not just a Shiur, This was the Rebbe message to each and everyone of us who had the opportunity to listen closely. Let’s continue to do everything possible to Zoiche Bias Moshiach Tzidkeinu B’Heira B’Yomeinu. MAMESH
There was a tragic accident today in crown heights where a 25 year old boy was killed by a sanitation truck it is very unfortunate that the family cannot cover the funeral costs. If anyone can be part of this huge mitzvah of helping a person to bury them it’s is one of the biggest mitzvahs you can be part of. If anyone can help please direct to the organizers of the funeral you will pay them direct they need to raise 6k by tomorrow morning. Thanks to whomever can help out and may we only share good news.
Your neshama should have the loftiest aliyah, everyone will miss you dearly.
Abishter!!!!! Not one more second, we cannot stand one more single moment of galus!!!! Give us Moshiach now!!!! Please we are begging you
This is truly heartbreaking!!! An only child??!!! His poor parents! Please moshiach COME NOW!!!!
baruch dayan haemet
whats his fathers name?
Gedalya ate in our sukkah and learned with our son. He was a very kind man. May his neshama have an aliya and shturm shamayim to bring Moshiach now!
The anguish of the parents must be unfathomable!
I’m wondering if anyone will name their baby after him as a great comfort to the parents. I know as he died tragically and so young, a sheilo must be asked but please can we maybe think about it… He left no descendants…
His parents need comforting in any way we can!
where it not for the sincerity and the simple truth of your words i would have reprimanded you for what you said because coming across that way may be out of place and a bit selfish nevertheless, we are all struggling to keep our heads above water if we would be honest with ourselves and your words were really inspiring and refreshing. I am taking on a hachlata in his memory please everyone do the same. Even something small makes a difference and brings Moshiach closer, a time where there will be no more pain or tears. May it be… Read more »
As Mosai may we be zoche to Moshiach now!!!
whats Gedalya’s full hebrew name? How can I find out?
Dear friends,
Having read the tragic news, it is deeply painful. The intentions of this article are purely positive. It is however kind of a bit out of place. When someone writes “remembered” it refers to something in the past. Just like the Rebbe didn’t say Ziya the whole first year. Again the intentions are good, but he is not remembered, he is very present. It’s just a painful state (I hope I make sense).
Baruch dayan hahemet moshiach now ! 🙁
I will try to say the daily chumash of the day if an aliya for his neshama. Something as tragic as this cant hold us back his neshama deserves our hachlotos and tefillos. borush dayan emes.
To #3 Shkoyach!!
Moshiach Now! Ad Mosai?
yasher koach! very inspirational 🙂
BARUCH DAYEN HAEMES
an amazing JEW
What good comes from this? His life is an example for other people.
The pain runs so very deep.
someone from morristown
i remember him
He, being a Baal teshuva, inspires me, frum from birth, to generate a fraction of his determination and passion for yiddishkeit. I say proudly that those of us born frum have much to learn from people like Gedaliya and other baalei teshuvah. Maybe if I can become a ‘bt’ in some way this will be a boost for the Neshama of the deceased.
Thank you Gedaliya.
Mushka
It’s been an honor to have learned with and from Gadalia, may his Neshama find peace and bring Moshiach. He was a true tzadik, and had a passion for Torah and ahavas yisroel that I hope to emulate. A real simin teshuva for all the community and all those that have known him.
what a special person
a tsadik! baruch dayan ahemes
He should have the greatest Aliyas HaNeshama and beg Hashem to bring Moshiach Now! Ad Mosai ad Mosai ad Mosai!!!
hi. I am a bais rivka student that just returned from an amazing inspirational shabbaton. The theme of the shabbaton was “bishvili nivra hahelem, and that even in times that the good in the world seems hidden we need to find the good. In honor of gedalyas memory I take upon myself that even in a time of tradgedy, I will recognize that hashem is running this world and there is a greater picture. Although in such times it is difficult to find the good, it really is for the good. May gedalya be a guteh better for his family… Read more »
