Mr. Norman Katz, long time resident of Palos Verdes, CA, passed away suddenly on Friday night, Adar 14, 5774.
He was 74, and his passing came as a great shock to the members of the South Bay community.
An electrical engineer for Aerospace, Norman was one of the founders of Chabad in the South Bay, California area. In 1973 he was one of the first families to bring a Shliach, Rabbi Eli Hecht, to the South Bay community.
In 1989 he helped establish Chabad of Palos Verdes with Rabbi Yitzie Magalnic to serve as the local Chabad Shliach where he lived. Norman served as gabbai at Chabad of Palos Verdes.
Known as a kind and caring individual, he never spoke a negative word about anyone, friends said. He supported many Chabad institutions in California as well.
He is survived by his wife, Adrienne Katz, and their children Mordy Katz – Los Angeles, Jolene Sonnenberg – Israel and many grandchildren.

Sad. A very worthy man. Large shoes to be filled. I am glad that our paths crossed as he was imprssive from a distance. I can’t say i knew him other than from being in the same shul. But, his presence was felt and will be missed.

Dear Mrs. Katz, As the first full-time Shluchim to Palos Verdes (1987 – 1990) where we established the Chabad house where it still sits today, we fondly remember you and Reb Nachman and how you treated us as family. When I asked Reb Nachman to be Gabbai of our shul, at first he was hesitant. Showing true humility, he told me he doesn’t know if he’s worthy of such a task! Reb Nachman was more than worthy. Though a man of few words, those who knew him well, appreciated his genius and keen intellect. He was able to speak to… Read more »

Nachman was a great and humble Tzadick and who knows how many Yidden were brought closer to Hashem thru him?
