A new seminary is joining the many options available for Chabad girls around the world — only this will be in the exotic South Africa.
The new institution, whose temporary name is Johanesburg Seminary, is being founded by Rabbi Aharon and Mashi Rose, local Shluchim for over 20 years and leaders of Waverley Shul – Northern Suburbs Hebrew Congregation.
Serving at one of the largest Orthodox shuls in the city, they give shiurim, lecture, and counsel individuals and families on a regular basis, and have become known in the South African Jewish community.
“We need another seminary as an option for our girls,” says Mrs. Rose, “and this seminary will be unique. It will offer a combination of chassidishe varemkeit, superior academics and fascinating trips, while creating an environment that will nurture the girls as individuals.”
She said she expects the Johanesburg community to benefit from the presence and energy of Chabad girls and for the students to enrich their lives in a community known for its warmth and respect for tradition.
“We will be accepting girls from around the world who want to take advantage of this unique year of learning in Johannesburg’s warm and vibrant Lubavitch community,” Mrs. Rose said.
She plans “an intake in September for girls in the Northern hemisphere, and in January for girls in the Southern hemisphere.”
The staff of stellar teachers will also include (in no particular order) Mrs. Sara Chana Kesselman, Mrs. Mashi Lipskar, Rabbi and Mrs. Stern, Rabbi Finkelstein, Mrs. Rivky Chaikin, Rabbi Sholom Ber Groner, Mrs. Rochel Goldman, Mrs. Etti Klein, Mrs. Nechama Fishman, Mrs. Shterna Weinberg, and more.
The Roses said they will provide the girls with a warm and nurturing environment, and arrange eye opening trips to see South Africa’s legendary natural sights and wildlife in Cape Town, Durban, and the safari.
Mrs. Rose will be meeting mothers, educators and prospective students in New York on Wednesday, January 29, from 5:00 to 6:00 PM at the Shluchim Office, 816 Eastern Parkway.

I’m so thrilled to hear this, had been saying it since the 1991 when my daughter finished school. Great teachers! Wishing all hatzlocha rabba! # 12 also questioned the Cape Town picture, then figured its one of the places they’ll visit 🙂

What kind of seminary is it? Did it open? How do you download applications? Price?
Have been looking around for a place – this is looking good.
Ambitious! May it be a success and a blessing.
Can’t wait to hear more!
I knew you would be on the staff. They are lucky to have you! Hatzlacha!
most out of towners mothers and daughters are not in crown heights anymore.
Mrs Kleins classes are so interactive and applicable!! Great roundup of teachers!
This is so wonderful! I remember how great it was having sem girls around when I was younger… I still have connection with a lot of them. This is a great venture! Harzlocha to the roses and everyone else involved!
So exciting! wishing you much success!
I agree #16. I learnt and remember so much from the discussions in Mrs. Ettie Klein’s classes…
the Rebbe did send individuals to university based of course on His knowledge of what was right for that particular person . the idea of education and making oneself a keili for parnosa and self fulfillment were very much accepted by the Rebbe .we do want the education to be gained in a m,ore temimiusdik environment such as a small college , correspondance etc . as an aside we shluchim are very happy to take the money of our educated and therefore earning congregants .
Ettie Klein is amazing!
will we be able to get grants for the sem?
Why didn’t this open the year that I went to sem???
Why would a seminary for Lubavitch girls supply credits for university when the Rebbe categorically opposed his chassidim going to university.
Just wondering.
She is the best teacher in the world!!! so comited! and so thorough!!! i still remember everything i learned in her class from years ago.
Great news!!
Wishing you hatzlocho from your friends Down Under (Sydney)

I have to laugh though cos the Seminary is in Johannesburg and the front picture is of Cape Town. I think that settles the Joburg vs Cape Town argument once and for all
