The cover page of New York Post’s Sunday edition about the murder of Satmar developer Menachem Stark HY”D is enraging civic leaders and members of the frum Jewish community alike.
“Who didn’t want him dead?” read the bold letters on the cover with a close-up photo of a clearly bearded Chassidic Jew from Williamsburg who was 39 years old and a father of 8 children.
The Post’s subtitle read “slumlord found burned in dumpster” in reference to the business troubles of Stark, a prominent real estate developer whose body was found in the trash container at the Getty gas station in Great Neck just before 4 p.m. Friday.
As reported, Stark was hustled into a white minivan after struggling with two thugs who approached him as he left his South Side Associates office on Rutledge St. near the Williamsburg Bridge late Thursday.
In contrast, the competing tabloid Daily News ran a less outrageous, yet informative cover, albeit under a cheery advertisement for “over $300,000 in prizes.”
“Torched!” read the headline over the photo of Stark and a dumpster standing abandoned in the snow. “Kidnap victim suffocated, burned in L.I. dumpster,” read the sub-title.
The Daily News is the 4th most widely circulated daily newspaper in the U.S. while the Post ranked as the 7th most circulated.
Long Island’s newspaper Newsday had a surveillance camera photo of the van Stark was abducted in on Thursday. “Cops probe abduction, death of Brooklyn businessman,” it wrote under the title “Found on L.I.”
New York City Councilman David Greenfield tweeted: “Menachem Stark’s grave was still fresh when NYPost defamed him. Shame on them for lacking basic decency.”
Benny Polatseck, who works in finance and legal collections, was quick to prepare a short protest clip calling on the public to “Tell the New York Post, we did not want Max Stark Dead”:
A Facebook page titled “Condemn the NY Post for Sundays Cover Page” has garnered over 2,000 “likes.”
Boruch Wolf wrote on the page: “Curiously NY Post accessed and published a ‘sealed’ arrest. Perhaps it was sealed because allegation turned out to be without merit? Just wondering out loud.”
Yaacov Berhman of the Jewish Future Alliance said he felt that the Post’s coverage “came very close to legitimizing his murder.” He added: “If you don’t respect the dead, at least have some respect for the family. I am deeply disturbed by the cover.”
Brooklyn Borough President Eric Adams has called the front cover “hateful coverage” and is holding a press conference on Sunday, January 5 at 3:00 PM at the Brooklyn Borough Hall Rotunda at 209 Joralemon Street in Downtown Brooklyn.
Adams’ press release said he “will join Jewish community leaders and local elected officials to condemn the New York Post’s hateful coverage of the murder of Menachem “Max” Stark.”

I am very shocked that the Post, of all papers, would use such a headline. During the Crown Heights Pogrom, the Post was the most supportive one for the CH community.
Nevertheless, let’s assume the headline would not have been so outrageous. Are the negative allegations against him not true? Yes, he gave lots of tzedaka to Jewish causes. But, are you allowed to cheat or neglect, even a goy, to be able to do such “charity?”

Mr. Menachem Stark, was an incredibly helpful and generous person. He tried to help anyone in need.

Actually yes, if you actually ever read the post you will see that they are equal opportunity and no feelings will be spared no matter the religion or color of the person. You will also see that much of the time the post has many pro israel articles so you cannot pick and choose and make a big outcry when its one of ours. I am not defending how sick the headline is but lets call a spade a spade here. We cannot be the boy who cries wolf here and call everything that offends us Anti-Semitism.
Are you really comparing hitler to a newspaper? They print sensational headlines like this all the time, this is not anti-semitism. This is a callous disregard for the value and sanctity of human life and they also looked past the fact that this may bring all those anti-semites out of the woodwork and perpetuate the stereotypes the world has about us but the post is not known to be anti-semitic, just sickeningly and morbidly sensasionalist. I have one question for the Post: Would this story have been written the way it was if the victim was not a Hasidic Jew with a Streimel? Would you have quoted anonymous commentors as his “enemies” when in reality they regularly spew hateful, vitriolic comments aimed at Orthodox Jews? To number 2 and 3, NYPost is known as a trash rag that defames and takes no mercy on anyone regardless of race or religion. They sell papers by printing outrageous titles. Comparing to Nazi Germany or Antisemitic is quite ridiculous. Don’t buy the paper is the answer.
