Two weeks ago, the weekly Ami Magazine published a black and white photo of the Satmar Rebbe, R’ Yoel Teitelbaum OBM, attending a Lubavitch wedding in 1948.
Lubavitch Archives has contacted Rabbi Yosef Landa, Regional director of Chabad of Greater St. Louis, and received details about the photo from the wedding of his parents, Rabbi Avraham Tzvi and Chaye Landa.
He said the photo was taken at the Kabolas Ponim at the wedding which took place on the 19th of Kislev, 5709 (1948) at the Gold Manor wedding hall in Brooklyn.
“Our father was a Talmid of the Lubavitcher Yeshivas in Vilna and Shanghai during the war years, and arrived in New York in 1946, where he continued to study at the Lubavitcher Yeshivah in Crown Heights,” he wrote to Ami.
“Our maternal grandfather was Harav Yitzchok Klein, z”l, was a well-known Chassidisher Yid from Hungary who lived in Williamsburg. He asked the Satmar Rav zt”l, who had arrived in America fairly recently, to be the Mesader Kedushin.
According to him, seen in the photo are, continuing clockwise from the Satmar Rav: the Chosson; Reb Meir’l, the son of the famed Amshinover Rebbe, Reb Shimale, who was in Shanghai; Rabbi Mordechai Groner; unknown; unknown; Harav Mordechai Mentlick, Rosh Yeshivah in the Lubavitcher Yeshivah; Reb Yitzchok, a nephew of the Amshinover Rebbe.
Standing from left to right: Binyomin Williger; unknown; Pesach Rabinovitch, a talmid of the Lubavitcher Yeshivah in Shanghai; unknown; Reb Yossel Ashkenazi, longtime Gabbai of the Satmar Rav; Shea Bronstein, also a talmid from Lubavitch in Shanghai; Shlomo Braver; unknown; Rav Moshe Ber Weinberger, the Payer Rav; Chaim Alter Roth.
The wedding photorapher was Mr. Harry Trainer. He told Lubavitch Archives that this was the first wedding the Satmar Rov has attended in the United States. He didn’t have any additional photos of the Satmar Rebbe from that wedding in his archive.
However, Lubavitch Archives did manage to locate a picture of the chupah at a collector in Williamsburg (see blow).
