Yosef Gorowitz is a Crown Heights native, an Oholei Torah Alum and founder and CEO of Prodege LLC which includes the popular online rewards site, Swagbucks.com.
After being mentored by his grandfather and father for a full year, he founded an offline business at the age of 20. When online commerce became wildly popular, he jumped on the cyber bandwagon and founded Protege.
Prodege’s Swagbucks.com is an online rewards company that strives to bridge the gap between brands and consumers through an interactive and rewarding advertising medium.
In 2013, it was ranked #67 in Inc. Magazine’s list of top 100 marketing companies.
1. How is Swagbucks.com different from other online reward sites like MyPoints and Ebates?
To put it simply, our selection. We offer the widest variety of means to earn rewards. If you take a look at our site, you will see that rewards can be earned not only by shopping, but also by watching videos, playing games, answering surveys, and discovering new brands. In addition, a Swagbucks user can earn rewards simply by searching the web using our browser search tool. No other company offers so many channels.
2. Why did you decide to go into this business?
My interest in this market evolved over time. The concept of consumer-brand relationships has always been a source of fascination for me, especially with regard to how it is affected by advertising mediums. I liked the idea that a consumer can be rewarded based on his or her preferences and interests. This provides an extra benefit to the consumer in the relationship.
3. What do you think is the secret to your success?
Believing in the Tzemach Tzedek’s mantra of “tracht gut.” If you believe that good will happen, you will see good results. If you think the results won’t turn out as you hope, you’re setting yourself up for failure. The actual positive thought process brings on success.
4. Did you have a particular obstacle when you started out?
Like every startup, we didn’t have very much access to capital. It takes time to generate revenue. But if you have an end goal in mind, with positive thinking and bitachon, you’ll get there eventually.
It also took me time to realize that our religious background puts us in a unique position. When I meet potential investors and employees, I come across as unique, and people respect that. Do I emphasize the fact that I’m a Lubavitcher chossid with a beard? Most definitely. I try using that as a selling tool. At conferences, those I network with won’t forget my face; because I look so radically different, I’m hard to miss. By trying to look like everyone else, you’re actually doing yourself a disservice.
Don’t blend in. Be proud of who you are, and don’t be ashamed to talk about it. It’s what makes you stand out in a crowd.
5. Projects you’re currently working on?
We are currently working to make the reward-earning experience one that is customized to each individual user’s preferences. We do this by finding out what it is that consumers are specifically interested in and then target them accordingly.
If one customer prefers to earn rewards by gaming rather than shopping, we will know to recommend games to them that we think they’ll prefer, or vice versa.
6. What is the best piece of advice for someone looking to start a business in online marketing?
You need to have a good balance of gut instinct and hard data. Don’t develop the tendency of leaning to either one or the other, or you’ll find yourself having a hard time moving forward with the business. And, like I said before, always employ positive thinking and bitachon.

for all the reasons the Rebbe pointed to against the danger inherent in college, Today’s college scene is worse and more dangerous than ever,
want proof:
Look at any 5 ffb girls who went to college, how many are still not living with life long regrets????
the downflow of the beard is the downflow of the 13 Attributes of Mercy and the source of parnassa. I believe this is from Zohar and was in an Igros that I opened up before I started dating and the Igros letter clearly told a sefardi man to keep his beard untouched so that he would have parnassa.
not rejecting, questioning how the Rebbe would approach it now.
your wrote:
“I don’t know” “I’m not so taken to that”
Please be more direct, are you rejecting the Rebbe’s view on college?
I don’t know. I’m not so taken to that. Not everyone is cut out for business, and most professional jobs nowadays need college degrees. That’s simply the reality… Not one or the other – both.
i whole heartedly agree with ur obsevation!!!
Just bec someone seems chasidish doesnt make it so!, it is unfortunately true that many “so called” mashpiyim” dont have their own mashpiyim! even though this is a Bakasha nafshis… from the Rebbe pleading and demanding for our own benefit! the Rebbe says that His answer and thus blessings will come davka through the process of consulting a designated personal Rav/Mentor caring expert in the subject being discussed.
I hope to see many more such uplifting stories and examples of applied chasidus in action and its beautiful wholesome fruits bgashmiyus uberuchniyus!
The article DID mention that he’s an OT alum 😉
love swagbucks, great site wit lots of deals
very big kiddush Hashem as well
I work in a niche market, and my beard and yalmuka only ENHANCE my standing within the ‘community’ of folks I deal with. Everyone knows me, and remembers me. On the flip side, it’s a huge responsibility to always create a Kiddush Hashem.
This guy is a REAL chossid! To many dress the dress but dont impliment the basic takanos, then they wonder “Im chasidish! why am i not seeing Hatzlacha?” Actually, those who follow the Rebbe’s takanos dont need college! the Takanos themselves goes a long way towards developing a sharper mind, a diciplined work ethic, orginization skills, time management skills, Peope skills, sales skills, When a bachur, has kabolas oil (not just superficially) and follows the Takanos, 1. Mivtzoyim, Camp, Merkaz Shlichus, = Sales skills and Chinuch savy. 2. Shmiras hasdorim + Chitas, Rambam inyone geula etc = Time management skills… Read more »
Which Gorowitz family?
chasidus in action!
I know who you are.
Is this the same Mr.Gorowitz I recently saw playing basketball in the olimpics?!?! This dudes amazing going from pro-ball to building a huge business!! When I saw him play in the olimpics I said he must train for hours, who knew he was simultaneously duilding a business! Sportsman, bussinessman, beard man! What a guy!
I think this is one of the most important type of articles to put on this site! I had the same experience with my beard and business as well. I was very nervous how people would react to me and was surprised it was only in my head, not anyone else’s!
Hey!!!:)
WOW, very impressive. Many bachurim think entering the business world means doing some artwork on the beard. Great message.
We rock!
I read this interview 1st in the C.H.Y.E newsletter. 110% amazing… If something is going to hold you back in business it won’t be your beard…
