This is one Cadillac you hope not to ride in.
A brand new ambulance that has been donated to Hatzalah of Crown Heights, the volunteer Emergency Medical Service (EMS) organization, is described as the “Cadillac of ambulances.”
Costing $185,000, the Horton Emergency Vehicle claims to be one of the pioneers among van ambulance builders of the late 1960’s, units that were the forerunners of today’s paramedic ambulances.
Horton combines craftsmanship with modern technology to produce safe interiors and exteriors and the Intelliplex electronics system that monitors oxygen levels, engine and alternator performance, and patient area temperature.
A member of Hatzalah told COLlive they were overdue for a new ambulance. “The life expectancy of an ambulance is 5 years, and both of ours are 7 or so years old,” he said.
The new ambulance –which is already stationed in front of Lubavitch Headquarters at 770 Eastern Parkway– was donated by Mr. and Mrs. Yehuda Backer, in memory of Yitzchok Shmuel and Chana Bracha Backer OBM and in honor of the Hatzalah members.
“It should be in use by tonight,” the Hatzalah member said. “Up to now we’ve been installing and transferring radios and equipment.”
Within two weeks, Hatzalah of Crown Heights are getting a second new ambulance which is being sponsored by a few individuals to help them continue their dedicated service to the community.
