The New York Police Department has assigned a new Commanding Officer to the 71st Precinct, located in Central Brooklyn in the southern end of the Crown Heights neighborhood.
COLlive.com has learned that an announcement will be made this week of the appointment of Deputy Inspector George Fitzgibbon as the new precinct head.
He is coming from the 69th Precinct in Brooklyn, where he has won the praise of local clergy and community officials for “diligence, bravery, and for helping to keep Canarsie safe.”

Fitzgibbon will be replacing Deputy Inspector John Lewis who has served in the post for a year and a half and will now be overseeing school safety in north and south Brooklyn areas.
Under Lewis, there was a 0.16% increase in overall crime in the 71st, home to 110,000 lower and middle income residents of 3 major ethnics – African American, Lubavitch Jews and Carribbean Americans.
According to records, crime has been up 13.50% in the last 2 years, yet that is compared to the major drop in crime in New York City in the last decades. In the 71st alone, crime is down 38% since 2001 and down 75% since 1993.
A major incident during Lewis’ tenure was the brutal beating of Ehud Halevi, 21, by two police officers on the holiday of Shmini Atzeres 5773. It was recorded by security surveillance at the Aliya Institute, where it happened.
When public outrage erupted, the soft-spoken Lewis responded honestly. He admitted there were “inconsistencies” in the aggressive officers’ statements and said “this conduct is not tolerated.”
In recent months, Lewis was working to put a stop to the series of burglaries of Jewish homes on Friday nights. Another ongoing challenge was the repeated incidents of snatching of iPhones and other electronic devices.
During his time as Captain, Lewis has had a warm and positive working relationship with the local Jewish community. He took an active role in understanding the specific needs of the Jewish residents, especially during holidays and special events.
Residents were appreciative to find him personally present and taking charge when problems occurred, and ready to listen. Not surprising for a man who says his mantra is “Never assume.”

for the new guy, its gonna be a tough act to follow!
lets hope for the best!
Lubavitch Jews is not an ethnic. Nor an ethnicity.
we need him to stay
he has so much to offer
Write to Commissioner Raymond W. Kelly,
Ask that they should reconsider this decision:

I’m not just asking others to do so, I already did.
I hope the man coming in will have what it takes, including a heart
He did a great job, really is an honorable man.
#2 is right. Its because there was much more transparency under Captain Lewis, what crown heights needs is video cameras!!!!
that, my friend, is the reason he is going. Because he actually looked out for Jewish residents. Not PC.
has the community been consulted at all?
lets hope things continue to improve under this new installation gw!
may god give him all the strength and wisdom to do his job well! amen!
He did a great job. Please reconsider.
Captain Lewis really did a great job. Showed great interest in the community and really worked hard to keep us safe. Very sad to see him go.
He was a great captain and really cared for the Jews in the community
Sad to see him go !
Really sad to see him leave. Did a great job. Hands on with dealing with the community. Is someone that anyone can approach, speak to and he will listen. We will miss you.
He pushed his officers to go out there and get the bad guys, not sit behind desks. Very honest. A MENSCH!
Moishe Schmukler
This sounds like a demotion
But IMHO, overall he did a good job and deserves a promotion
Still, something has got do be seriously done about the robberies and assaults, many times by repeat offenders
“”this conduct is not tolerated.”
Yes it is…because the laws in NY State are weak and heartless…just like it’s lawmakers and leaders.
PUT SOME R E A L LOVE IN THE LAWS!
(Did not use my real name…I am wary of those in power…’Pirke Avos.’)
He seemed good. 20 times better than Vega and 100 times better than Simonetti.
vega was ok and lewis is amazing, peter simonetti was the trash.
Why is that a comparison to our time . crime was much higher then to make it sound like with less now.
iPhones can be sold on the street for at least 150 to 200 dollars. it’s much easier than stealing a boombox back in the day. so if you add the dollar value to the theft today. It’s much higher now than back in those years.
Good point #2 there’s deff been a change for the better since the dark Vega days. Us in CH need to make sure that Vega never gets any serious promotions anywhere in the city. Lewis also did some innovative smart safety policing during Tishrai and he should be commended for that.
I think the reason their are “crime rate has gone up” is because under john lewis the police took more police reports, not cause the crime actually went up
Canarsie is a very quiet and safe neighborhood, so this is interesting.
