President Barack Obama‘s visit in Crown Heights won’t be the only political showdown involving Chabad this weekend.
The Rebbe’s Diamond Daveners – Kol Yakov Yehuda, a junior Chabad boys congregation in Los Angeles, will be convening after Shabbos to cast a ballot for their elected leaders.
The election tradition has been a unique flavor of “the shul for the kids, by the kids” for its 12 years of existence, explains its founder, Rabbi Mendel Duchman.
“It is a signature event which highlights the ability of the children to empower themselves when given the right tools,” he said about the shul named after his father-in-law, Rabbi Yakov Yehuda (JJ) Hecht OBM who empowered children through education.
During a Melava Malka meal on Motzoei Shabbos, three teams of three candidates that are running will present their pledge improvements to the congregation with a video presentation and a live debate.
The three teams are Sholem Schapiro, Shmueli Wolowik and Effy Schmukler marked as WSS, Mendel Rav-Noy, Mendy Ginsburg and Yaakov Goldman known as the GM’s and Zushe Lerman, Sruly Glabaman and Schneur Zalman Arnold presented as the GLA’s.
The candidate are all students of Cheder Menachem of Los Angeles.
Duchman said all voting and tallying of votes will be done under the watchful eye of an independent auditor “guaranteeing a free and fair outcome.”
