The latest VIP to visit the Holy land was Rick Perry, Governor of Texas who was a top contender for the Republican nomination for the U.S. presidency in 2012.
“Cheerio and Shalom” is how one newspaper labeled his and his wife Anita Perry’s 11-day economic development mission to London and Israel.
It is being sponsored by Americans for Economic, a non-profit that pundits say will be used to advance Perry’s second attempt to run for president in 2016.
At the Kotel in Jerusalem, Perry was greeted by Rabbi Shmuel Rabinovich. Together they prayed and placed a note between the stones in the wall, as customary.
Perry noted that this wasn’t his first time at the Kotel, and yet he is deeply moved by the visit to “the holy place that marks the history and rich past of the Jewish nation.”
The rabbi thanked him for his support of Israel and his statement that he will continue standing with the Jewish nation.
Perry was set to speak at the Water Technology and Environmental Control Exhibition and Conference Israel 2013.
Israel was Texas’ 38th largest export destination in 2012 with more then $999.46 million in exports, including transportation equipment, chemicals, machinery, computers and electronics and fabricated metal products.
The National Journal says Perry is trying to home his foreign policy credentials with the visit.
