Waltham, MA – A report issued by the Steinhardt Social Research Institute (SSRI) of Brandeis University states that the U.S Jewish population is substantially larger than has been previously reported.
Using a methodology known as “data synthesis,” which collectively compiles data taken from academic, governmental, and other surveys, the SSRI has determined that Jewish population surveys conducted back in 2000 were erroneous in their claims that American Jewry numbers were in decline.
Highlights from the study include:
• There are an estimated 6.8 million Jewish adults and children in the U.S.
• 4.2 million adults self-identify as Jewish when asked about their religion
• Nearly 1 million adults consider themselves Jewish by background and other criteria
• There are an estimated 1.6 million Jewish children
• Over 40% of American Jews live in just six states. Slightly over 20% resides in New York State, 14% in California, followed by 12% in Florida; 8% in New Jersey; and 5% in Massachusetts and Pennsylvania
• The largest percentage resides in New York City (13%), with the next largest in Southern Florida (Miami, Palm Beach and Broward counties; 8.6%). New York suburban areas (Long Island & Westchester) account for 7% of the total population. Los Angeles County (including Ventura and Orange counties) accounts for just over 7% of the total population
• Additional centers include Boston (including western Massachusetts areas), Northern New Jersey, Chicago, Philadelphia, and Washington DC
• Just over 1 million (24%) are aged 65 years and older
• They are more than twice as likely as other Americans to be college graduates
this is so beutiful to see how the yidden multiplied so mush since then.
to #1- yes their are ppl who consider themselves jewish- but for every one non jew who considers himself jewish there are so much more who odn’t but truly are. for example menyppl from soviet union and the holocost who are still afraid to raise their children telling them that they are are jewish or the yunger generation who wern’t raised with a jewish identity
We have much more making up to do, this is just the number of jews who were nifter. Hard to imagine just how many people died.
we are making up for the tragic holocaust

This also accounts for Jews who may not think of themselves as Jewish since they don’t “practice” but actually are.
not too many count themselves to be Jewish…
a v. small percentage fall into that category
These numbers are only so big because they count anyone who calls himself a Jew, even if he’s not actually Jewish.
