Chabad House on Campus in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, held its 25th Anniversary Celebration in the elegant O’Hara Student Center Ballroom at the University of Pittsburgh on 7 Tishrei, Wednesday, September 11th.
“Despite our busiest time of the year on campus, with students attending a variety of Chabad House programs, we were thrilled to celebrate this important milestone,” said Rabbi Shmuel Weinstein, Director of Chabad House.
“We are very grateful for the community’s support, and for the increased involvement of students and alumni,” he said, naming some of the activities currently happening on campus: New Student Leadership Retreat, Pizza and Parsha, Women’s Lunch & Learn, High Holiday services and large Yom Tov meals.
The main program was preceded by a reception where students served hors d’oeuvres to supporters amidst a full buffet of salads and desserts, along with klezmer-style musical tunes performed by local Jewish musicians.
The main program began with Rabbi Shua Hoexter, Program Director, welcoming everyone after which Rabbi Weinstein warmed the hearts of the audience with his personal stories of the growth and expansion of the “Chabad House family” of students and alumni over the years, extending to eight campuses throughout the city now.
His wife, Sara, presented a service award to Moshe and Estee Gelman, and Dr. Sean McGreevey, Assistant Dean of Students at Chatham University, presented a student leadership award to Chabad House student president at Chatham, Leiba Estrin.
Former student from the University of Pittsburgh, Daniel Kurland, a lawyer in Washington, DC, came back to share his story as a student 16 years ago, and to pay tribute to what Chabad House did for him.
Dr. David Nesenoff left supporters spellbound by keeping everyone at the edge of their seats with his meaningful and entertaining presentation, “Inspiring a Generation.”
A supporter at the event commented, “He has an incredible way of communicating how the Lubavitcher Rebbe’s message about Israel transformed his life.”
Nesenoff fired up those attending with his discovery of how to fight anti-semitism: Torah first! “Fight anti-Jewish with Jewish,” Nesenoff insists. His advice for this generation: ” inspire, inspire, inspire!”
