MAYORAL RACE – DEMOCRAT
Bill de Blasio capped a surge from seemingly nowhere in New York City’s mayoral primary Tuesday with a commanding lead on his Democratic opponents Tuesday, hovering near the threshold needed to avoid a runoff.
With 97% precincts reporting, Bill de Blasio leads with 40.2% of the vote, while former city Comptroller Bill Thompson is in second with 26.2%. City Council Speaker Christine Quinn is a distant third with 15.3% of the vote.
De Blasio needs 40% of the vote to avoid a runoff.
MAYORAL RACE – REPUBLICAN
Joe Lhota, former head of the Metropolitan Transit Authority (MTA) and former deputy mayor, has won the primary election to become the Republican Party nominee for New York City mayor.
He defeated billionaire grocery magnate John Catsimatidis with 52 percent to 41 percent of the vote, with 81 percent of precincts reporting Tuesday night.
Lhota was a deputy mayor under Rudolph Giuliani and worked with him in the aftermath of the 9/11 terror attack. He was also praised for steering the MTA subway system through Superstorm Sandy.
“I am the only candidate who will be ready on Day One. I will not need on-the-job training,” Lhota said in his victory speech. “My leadership has been tested in good times and in bad, and New Yorkers know what they’re getting with me.”
He described Brooklyn’s “transformation” thanks to the Giuliani administration’s crackdown on crime. “Today you can walk through Williamsburg, Fort Greene, Crown Heights, or along the beautiful Brooklyn Bridge Park and you will see neighborhood after neighborhood transformed into great places to live, work and raise a family.”
COMPTROLLER – DEMOCRAT
Manhattan Borough President Scott Stringer has won the Democratic primary for New York City comptroller, suppressing disgraced former Governor Eliot Spitzer‘s chances at a political comeback.
Stringer has a 52-percent-to-48-percent lead over Spitzer in incomplete and unofficial returns Tuesday night, with 92 percent of precincts reporting.
Despite his personal failings, Spitzer won support from young Jewish professionals in Crown Heights, but Stringer got the official endorsement from the Political Action Committee of Crown Heights and veteran activist Rabbi Shea Hecht.
Stringer will face Republican and other candidates in November.
BROOKLYN DISTRICT ATTORNEY – DEMOCRAT
In a historic upset, Ken Thompson was elected Democratic nominee for Brooklyn District Attorney, becoming the first African American nominee and the first candidate to defeat an incumbent Brooklyn D.A. since 1911.
The former federal prosecutor outed the controversial 23-year veteran District Attorney Charles Hynes by about 10,000 votes.
Hynes has been harshly criticized for the way he prosecuted child abuse cases in the frum Jewish community. Some mentioned his chase after Yitzchak Shuchat, former Crown Heights resident and currently in Israel, over racial beating.
“As District Attorney, I will fight to bring transparency, honesty and accountability to the public sector to give Brooklynites the government we deserve,” Thompson said in his speech.
CITY COUNCIL 35th DISTRICT
Political newcomer Laurie Cumbo won the Democratic primary as the 35th District City Council which includes Crown Heights, Fort Green and other neighborhoods.
Founder and director of the Museum of Contemporary African Diaspora (MoCADA) in Brooklyn, she was endorsed by the Political Action Committee of Crown Heights.
In an interview with COLlive ahead of the election, Cumbo said that her top priorities will be affordable housing, protecting small businesses and pursuing inter-community between the Jewish and Caribbean communities.

I have also sent Ken Thompson an email from his web page to tell him he is going to win ,and to congratulate him . Sure neough Th holy Mekubalim were right .
Hynes is full of lies and corruption.
LIES HAVE NO FEET
#5 you hit it right on the mark.
#10 Hynes has pretty much announced that he won’t use the chance to run. He wouldn’t have any chance of winning.
I voted for Thompson & Thompson.
New York has closed primaries, so registered Democrats can vote only for Democratic candidates. And since there are a lot more Democrats than Republicans in NYC, many times there is no Republican primary at all. So it makes sense to register as a Democrat – and that means that you’re going to be voting for someone or other from that party. (In the general election, of course, you can vote for whoever you want.)
there is a major party challenger, can you guess who is running on the republican ticket, I know you cant guess, so I will tell you, Charls Hynes, anyone know him???, in other words, it aint over
# 1 Re: “philosophical persuasion” This relates to discrimination and has no affect on ‘The 7 Noahide Laws’ which are universal. # 5 You never know, but when the new district attorney starts feeling his/her power, he might change. Listening to Joan Hamburg on WOR Radio yesterday discussing the elections she said: “NYC is the greatest city in the world.” Really? The USA is # 16 in desirable places to live: Look here:http://www.economist.com/news/21566430-where-be-born-2013-lottery-life?fsrc=scn/tw/te/tr/thelotteryoflife Then a woman said: “NYC is the biggest city in the world.” Oh really? (It’s not the biggest in population or size.) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/World%27s_largest_cities And the adults tell… Read more »
The happiest day in history in crown heights. Hopeully now we will get true justice in our shechuna.
Hynes is full of lies and corruption. sheker ein raglayim
So you like it when abuse victims get no justice. Go figure.
the jewish community are fools for not voting for hynes, you think this guy wouldnt go after shuchat over a black kid? this guy will let the black community off and go after the entire frum community
I am glad hynes is out but i would give the chair to a fiend who hurts kids – i voted him out due to the shochet case
Ever the optimist, no matter who wins what we, CH Jews, won’t see any change for the better until we drastically change our internal “leadership” & start seeing transparency in what goes on in our own back yard.
makes me so dissapointed. come on guys, you’re better than that! you’re smarter than that!
When you put a Father of 10 for 103 years in prison for a crime that others get probation – you loose many Jewish votes.
Not every member in Brooklyn supports 103 years prison for an abuser.
The national platform of the democratic committee calls for “a society where both public and private discrimination based upon race, gender, age, color, creed, national origin, religion, ethnic identity, orientation, gender identity, economic status, philosophical persuasion or physical disability are condemned and where our government moves aggressively to end such discrimination through lawful means” I don’t know what this means in relation to yeshivas and other Jewish institutions, or to handling Israel or what they mean by “philosophical persuasion” but it does not sound like something that is good for Judaism or the sheva mitzvos.
