The estimated 25,000 Jews who will be spending Rosh Hashana in the city of Uman are expected to be met with anti Semitic protests organized by the Svoboda ultranationalist movement.
500 Ukrainian police officers will be joined by 12 Israeli policemen to maintain public order near the burial site of the chassidic master Rabbi Nachman of Breslov during the High Holidays, JTA reported.
A warmer welcome to the visiting Jews is being given by Chabad Rabbi Shaul Horowitz, Chief Rabbi of the nearby city of Vinnitza.
The Shliach has used his contacts at the Havryshivka International Airport, which serves the Vinnytsia region, to arrange for the passengers to be greeted with food and drink upon their landing.
Before boarding buses and vans to Uman, the mostly Hebrew speaking pilgrims were able to daven and get useful local information from the rabbi and his assistants.
From there they headed to Uman, where Reb Nachman OBM has promised to intercede on behalf of anyone who would come to pray on his grave on Rosh Hashana, “be he the worst of sinners.”
Perhaps the Ukrainian nationalists will be more forgiving as well…
