From the COLlive inbox:
I would like to share with you an incident that happened to us this past Friday night, at our home in Crown Heights.
This past Friday night at about 4:45 AM (as was confirmed by our neighbor’s security camera) – while we were asleep – a burglar broke into our home by bending the bars on the dining room window that is in the back of the house.
He proceeded to steal items from the dining room, kitchen and an unoccupied bedroom. The light and air conditioner were on in the dining room, but this guy clearly has no fear. Also, the security camera shows him leaving 55 minutes after he came, so he was definitely in no rush to leave.
The miracle here is that we did not wake up while he was in our home…Baruch Hashem we are ok.
Last night two officers plus a supervisor came to investigate, followed by two detectives and two members of the Evidence Collection Team. It was good to see that the NYPD took this seriously.
Please let your readers know, that the window was closed but not locked – we were sure the bars on the window were enough to keep anyone out. Please take all precautions to make sure that this does not chas v’sholom happen to anyone else!
first of all wherever you live you are going to find crime, and not everyone has money to move, unless you want to help out,
I started crying so sad but you were safe
And once someone stoll
From our house but we were safe also bh

KV’CH TOVA
Is such an awesome place.
But hey, you get a lot of “government” help, so it’s worth it!
Consider this a tax, or parking ticket. It’s basically the same.
Why all the nasty animus? There are, unfortunately, plenty of break-ins all over the city, and in the suburbs,as well. If anything, what makes other neighborhoods less vulnerable to break-ins than ours – al pi teva – is their sophisticated and expensive security systems. I can just imagine how many more burglaries would be happening in other Jewish neighborhoods, both in the five boroughs and in the suburbs, if they didn’t have these sophisticated security systems installed, and made even more effective by prominently displayed signs informing passersby of these systems. Having said that, as commenters #7 and #18 indicate, first… Read more »
it is completely irresponsible to live in such a dangerous place
Believe it or not, some combos – all you need are the numbers in any order. So test to make sure yours is not like that.
crime happens everywhere you live, when you turn on the news you hear it all over, but some people are not aware of it, some people just think that it happens here, but it doesnt.
Dear readers, this type of crime IS going to get more common and worse over the next months/years. The reasons for it are not for this discussion, so here are some helpful tips you can do to protect your home. 1. Make sure ur window bars that run vertical have a horizontal bar going across the vertical bars. This will eliminate the spreading of bars. 2. Have proper exterior lighting at the exterior of your home. 3. Do not flaunt your belongings through your windows, get proper shades. 4. Get an alarm with central station monitoring. Video cameras will only… Read more »
Can you please give some more details where this happened?
Thanks
#30 – call the landlord/management office – you are entitled to windows that lock. Its easy to repair – Boro Park Glass – will do it not expensive.
#33 – actually, I have a # lock and the numbers can be entered in any order. My parents have a different type which must be like yours in which the #s have to be entered in sequence.
because he would not know the order
so he still would be outside!
nice try though!!!!!!
You gave that a lot of thought.
Those of you with the push-button combination locks should clean them every so often to remove the oil buildup from your fingers. All a thief has to do is blow some powder, which will stick most to the oily buttons, and now he knows your numbers.
The windows in my apartment do not lock. Any ideas as to what I can do to try to secure my apartment?
Protect your family get a shotgun. It’s legal. Get a permit first of course.
I thought #13 was being sarcastic…
CRIME IS A FACT OF LIFE EVERYWHERE. THE COMMENTS BY NUMBER 13 INDICATE THAT THIS PERSON HAS INTENSE ISSUES WITH CROWN HEIGHTS AND SHOULD SEEK PROFESSIONAL HELP. I AM LIVING IN CROWN HEIGHTS FOR SIXTY YEARS AND HAD ONE BREAK IN ABOUT 30 YEARS WHICH WAS PARTIALLY CAUSED BY CARELESSNESS ON MY PART. EVERYONE HAS TO PUT IN PLACE AS MANY DETERENTS AS POSSIBLE. THEIFS WILL ALWAYS SEEK OUT THOSE HOUSES WITH THE EASIEST EGRESS. I DRIVE THRU MY BACK DRIVEWAY AND SEE MANY HOMEOWNERS LEAVING THE BACK GATES COMPLETELY OPEN, LET ALONE LOCKED. THE COMMUNITY COUNCIL, SHMIRA, OR THE… Read more »

Ahh so maybe that why the shabbos alarm had been ringing.Too alert us of these break ins…
if you’re asleep in a bedroom with a/c on, you won’t hear anything going on in the house. I know that and so does a burglar. the fact that the police departmentS came is no indication of anything other than they had what to put on their timesheets. my bet is the burglars will not be caught. prove me wrong and post here when they do find the burglar, make arrests and return your belongings from hindsight you can learn to also have a window alarm. but it’s also true that CH is a place where crime will happen. that’s… Read more »
My Rov and his wife came downstairs one shabbos morning, all their silver and valuables were gone, the ganaf must have been there a while, even stopped to make himself breakfast before he hauled off his treasure. That was the first thing they noticed – the OJ and dirty cereal bowl were left on the kitchen table. Baruch haShem no one in the family was touched. It happens everywhere, to the nicest people. May HaShem keep us all safe from now on. A gut g’bentched yohr to all.
Ok ok, #13, you got your attention, now go get a life!
We were burglurized L’ail Shmurim Pesach. It was raining so hard, we slept through the whole burglary! B”H, we were unharmed, but it was like these guys knew where everything was in our house. #1) Keep your blinds or drapes closed. Try to keep valuables out of site. #2) Get an alarm system! We did after the incident and weren’t bothered since. ADT is the best! At least on Shabbos, you can keep your windows armed. #3) Should be #1! Hashem runs the world! Gum Zu L’Tova! The burglars walked by two of my kids sleeping on the couch! B’H,… Read more »

maybe an alarm is helpful
which block
living in ch is NOT considered irresponsible, things happen everywhere (disclaimer: I dont live in ch). if G-d wants you to experience a break in it will happen anywhere.
where do u live? where do u suggest to move that is safe?
TO NUMBER 13 WERE EVER YOU GO THERE IS CRIME. I GREW UP OUT OF CROWN HEIGHTS WE HAD BRAKE IN ALL THE TIME DONT BLAME CROWN HEIGHTS ITS THE SAFE PLACE. I FEEL SAFE IN CROWN HEIGHTS WHEN I GO TO VISIT MY PARENTS OUT OF TOWN IN A SUBERB AREAR I DONT FEEL SAFE. THERE IS MORE CRIME OUT OF CROWN HEIGHTS THEN IN CROWN HEIGHTS.
to #13
You clearly have issues, and have nothing smarter to say about this lovely and beautiful community. AND YES, KAN TZIVA HASHEM ES HABRACHA-WETHER YOU LIKE IT OR NOT!!!!
You are living in a bubble. That is not the route to freedom nor safety. Crime happens in the quiet hoods just the same as it does in CH. Pedophiles and Serial Killers and everything from bike theft to credit card scammers run rampant all over the Country. Yes, in the quiet suburbs. So think twice before you rant about Brooklyn or NYC or CH for that matter – putting aside Kan Tziva…if you gonna get mugged or robbed it can and DOES happen elsewhere. If it makes you feel better to knock CH so be it – I hope… Read more »
Of course it’s the homeowner’s fault what are you doing living in such a dangerous place? You are putting your family in danger by living in Crown Heights there are many safe areas frum Jewish communities that you can live in. And don’t tell me kan tziva etc. if it safe you live there with your family if it’s not you leave. if you stay there make sure you have what it takes to keep yourself safe and your family safe I myself left the neighborhood for this reason I will not keep my family in the danger zone
To the writer: I know and understand that you probably gave a detailed description to the police, but it would help if you included a description for the readers here as well. Can you let us know: 1. Which block did this happen on? 2. A dining room window is typically on the second floor of a home. was this the case by you? Did the burglar climb up? 3. Are we talking about standard welded iron bars, or the thinner ones typically used to protect apartments? These answers will be helpful to me, so that I can know of… Read more »
B”H you are all ok
even if the window would have been locked its not hard to break(even without making noise),but bending the bars! now that’s scary. what are we supposed to do?

Very courageous of the family to write the article the way they did! They clearly tell everyone how to avoid the incident that happened to them. Hope they find the burglar and the items stolen!
