An Effort Before Rabbi's Passing

A short while before his passing, the family of Rabbi Immanuel Schochet encouraged bochurim to learn in his merit.

By COLlive reporter

Even in his final days, Rabbi Dr. Immanuel Schochet OBM has inspired others to learn and grow in knowledge and understanding of Torah.

About 20 bochurim of the Mesivta Lubavitch in Toronto have become versed in the Talmudic tractate of Bava Metziah in a learning campaign sponsored by the Schochet family.

Testing them was his brother, Rabbi Dovid Schochet, Rabbi of the Chabad community in Toronto and President of the Orthodox Council of Ontario (Vaad HaRabbonim), as well as Rabbi Mordechai Ochs, Rabbi of Congregation Torah Emes of Toronto.

An event honored the bochurim was held with the participation of bochurim, their parents, hanhala staff and family members of Rabbi Schochet, who had spent his life teaching and writing about Jewish thought and ethics.

Mendel Jacobson, a bochur, made the siyum and inspiring words were heard from Rafi Schemel, a great-nephew of Rabbi Immanuel Schochet, as well as his son Rabbi Yitzchok Schochet from London and his brother Rabbi Ezra Schochet, Rosh Yeshivas Ohr Elchanan Chabad in Los Angeles.

The program was emceed by Rabbi Yosef Gorman who thanked the Talmidim Shluchim Avremel Vogel and Aizik Schwei for arranging the learning campaign. "It is a sure thing that in this zchus of the limud hatorah, they have added and honored the marvelous life of Rabbi Schochet. Baruch dayan haemes," the yeshiva said.
