In general unflavored domestic beer does not need a hechsher, although it’s preferable if it does. Specialty beers with added flavors/ingredients or aging in wine barrels clearly say so on the label and would require a hechsher. Shmalz brews have a hechsher on their unflavored and flavored beers. If in fact they have a particular beer with problematic ingredients that beer will not carry the hechsher.
