An overflow crowd of 500 people, of diverse backgrounds and interests, packed the Lubavitch Yeshiva ballroom on Sunday for the first Crown Heights Health and Wellness Fair.
Mutual to all of their minds was the Torah’s command of “You shall watch yourselves very well” (venishmartem meod lenafshoteichem).
It was an event that, for the first time, showed the expanding awareness of local Jewish community members in all things health, a gradual break from the past when smoking and fatty foods were the standard.
The fair was organized by Chaim Backman, a physical therapist in Crown Heights and a triathlon coach. Local businesses joined as co-sponsors. COLlive.com was the media sponsor.
“By all accounts, this was a success,” Backman said. “The vendors were very happy with the large turnout and were already asking when will be the next expo.”
There were lines waiting for delicious health shakes prepared by Natural Treats, while employees of Mr. Green’s were handing out slices of fresh, cut up fruit. But participants were not only there to take, but also to give. The Ahavas Chessed blood drive collected over 20 pints of blood.
In addition to vendors displaying their services, there were informative and even thought provoking presentations, such as 2 donor recipients. The one who lives in Crown Heights received a double lung transplant and went from death’s door to returning to a fully functional life with his family.
Representatives of Gymies/The Space spoke about the importance of exercise and different types of programs, Friendship Circle about helping people with disabilities, a nutritionist of Sunshine Pharmacy reviewed vitamins for good health and Margaret Tietz Rehab Center presented their fully Glatt kosher and Shomer Shabbos state of the art rehab facility.
Backman said many have expressed their appreciation for such a fair being organized. “I can’t believe we have so many resources here in Crown Heights,” one attendee told him. “I never knew about most of these people.”
One parent was happy to learn about the expanding variety of kosher gluten free food for his child, while others had their children signed up for exercise classes. “I’m getting my husband a yoga class as a surprise,” one woman said.

Hi everyone… I wish they would have more of these fairs. Knowledge is truly POWER!!! I really learned a lot about how differently people look at life and their health etc. I can’t wait till the next one so I can really prepare myself and educate people about protecting their loved ones income and assets BEFORE they get sick etc… once the patient is in a facility or needs home care it’s harder to file for Medicaid, but still very possible (that;s when most clients contact me and I get it done). The Seniors that I’ve met (in the thousands)… Read more »

Yankee P Hows the vitamin D Treating YOU?!?
To get the most realistic answer, ask a Rav who had a relative in need of an organ transplant.
Then he will truly understand the importance of organ donation and the lack of Frum donors.
As is all too common amongst us Frum Jews, we all want to take but never give. Life is a two way road. Just ask those who recieved organs and are now back living fully functional lives.
After 120: we don’t need our organs; but others do so that they may live; and their families can celebrate Simchas together with them
There were two massage therapists at the event with their massage chair. They were also giving info about their craniosacral and feldenkrais therapies. They come highly recommended!

Don’t forget that Revive the Tribe did a couple of health fairs already! See the facebook page under same name.
Also see http://www.wholeshare.com/revivethetribe.
There is a men’s spa in Manhattan called NICKEL Spa for Men . They do have women working there though so you need to specifically request a male.
Best of luck. They have a different special every month I think
One thing i would have been interested in is, where do i get a pedicure for my husband? Obviously i mean for a male to do it for him. Just like women feel better after they have a pedicure done i know that many men can benefit from this service, especially if they r diabetic there feet tend to hurt a lot. A real manicure with scrub and everything
That’s what I came for!
Didn’t c any massage therapists there, eventhough they advertised.can anyone post info on that please.interested in deep tissue massages
Chaim, where are you in the pictures? I see Sandra and Nechama Dina!!!
Very nice booth!
One of the sponsors of this event, HODS (Halachic Organ Donor Society), is based on the position that accepts brain-stem death as halachic death. Is this the position of the Rabbonim of Lubavitch in general and Crown Heights in particular?
i wish i couldve been there!! when is the next evenT????
Yankee P you da man!
GO TEAM FRIENDSHIP!!!!!!!!!!!!
